Towns and VillagesYou are in: Stoke & Staffordshire > Places > Towns and Villages > Shelton ![]() John Caudwell - of Shelton SheltonThis northern part of this multi-ethnic district is home to some smart Victorian terraces, where pottery managers lived a hundred years ago. Now, even its friends admit it's a little shabby. Funky Fact about Shelton...Shelton churns out Stoke-on-Trent's brightest sparks with both Stoke-on-Trent college and Staffordshire University both located in this small, industrial district. English billionaire John Caudwell, whose tale of rags to riches has made him a local hero, was born here. He is responsible for most of the present day mobile phone market! He remembers his school (St Mark's) as being next to a slaughter house. Where exactly is Shelton? It seems to merge out of the southern bit of Hanley, and reach down to the A500, thus absorbing Stoke railway station(?). Hanley Cemetery divides it from Etruria. At least, we think that's right... The 'Stoke Film Theatre' here is Staffordshire's only purpose-built cinema showing independent films.
