The town is home to one of the few 'theatres-in-the-round', the New Vic. The famous playwright Alan Ayckbourn started his career here. During the 70s & 80s, the multicoloured Fine Fare supermarket (where the cinema is now) was dubbed the ugliest building in Britain on TV. It looked like a carton. Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) had his schooling at the Middle School. He called the town 'Oldcastle' in his novels.
