Funky Facts about Newcastle

There are loads of towns and cities with the name Newcastle, each in their own language of course. These include:
Neuburg an der Donau, Germany / Neuchâtel, Switzerland / Neufchâteau, France / New Castle, Indiana, USA / New Castle, Pennsylvania, USA / Newcastle, South Africa / Shinshiro, Japan... and more.

The castle itself can be found in the Pooldam district - but it is now just a few stones.

The region's Jewish synagogue is to be found in Newcastle. It was established here after the original one in Hanley found itself in a re-development area.

Robbie Williams was born at the Royal Infirmary in Newcastle under Lyme.

The town is home to one of the few 'theatres-in-the-round', the New Vic. The famous playwright Alan Ayckbourn started his career here.

During the 70s & 80s, the multicoloured Fine Fare supermarket (where the cinema is now) was dubbed the ugliest building in Britain on TV. It looked like a carton.

Arnold Bennett (1867-1931) had his schooling at the Middle School. He called the town 'Oldcastle' in his novels.

What do you think about Newcastle?

Halfpint says the most famous thing is "The 29 bus, public transport of the highest calibre"! He thinks the worst thing is "the weather - the bloody great big rain cloud that lives above Newcastle!"

Pam bridgwood: Newcastle is the prettiest most compact market town for miles has been for centuries and always will be its proud of its heritage and it shows, which is more than can be said of most of stoke on Trent.

Can anyone remember what Yates wine Bar used to be in Newcastle before it changed to Yates??? It's driving us all mad trying to remember ! Thanks
