It stands on a ridge surrounded by old tilemaking and brickmaking sites - thus derives its name from the Saxon word, tun or ton, a town, and stall, an elevated place, seat or station. Funky Fact about Tunstall...Everyone knows that Tunstall is the birthplace of Robbie Williams - but did you also know that it is the birthplace of Clarice Cliffe, Susie Cooper and Gertie Gitana? ![]() A little further back in time than those four, it was known as Turnhill and it stands on a ridge dotted with old tilemaking and brickmaking sites some of which probably date back to the late middle ages. Here's what some people had to say about Tunstall... According to Rupert, the worst thing about Tunstall is the traffic, but Elizabeth is concerned about the decay of the park. Sarah hates the empty shops. Famous Things:Besides Robbie Williams, Clarice Cliffe, Susie Cooper and the like, there's the infamous Oatcake! The Owd Oatcake Mon is obviously an oatcake fan - he agrees the most famous thing about tunstall is the oatcakes ("big 'uns" he adds!) and told us the best place in Tunstall to hang out is "right by the oatcake shop just after it opens". Good Things:Wilko told us the best thing you can do in Tunstall is "go to Royal Stafford China and decorate a pot or some thing. Take as long as you like and have a fun time". Tunstall Al says "I was born and worked there before moving to Atlanta... I miss the food, the Oatcakes and everything really! Poppet says there's loads of great things about Tunstall - "The park, the baths... Everything I loved in the good old days, I don't know now but for the oatcakes and fish and chips" Bad Things:Lois says the worst thing about Tunstall is there's too much traffic and demolition of old buildings!
