Mow Cop

Situated on the border of two counties, Mow Cop is half in Staffordshire and half in Cheshire. At nearly 1100ft (almost 335 metres) above sea-level, Mow Cop offers some stunning views of the surrounding countryside landscape.

Funky Fact about Mow Cop

The ruin at the top of Mow Cop was deliberately built as it lies today so as to offer a romantic view for the then landowner!

Here's what some people had to say about Mow Cop...

Famous Things:

Fossil says that Mow Cop is probably most famous for the castle, but there's also the legendary Killer Mile! The mile-long endurance race which BBC Radio Stoke's Janine Machin will tell you is not your average 'fun run'!

Good Things:

According to Fossil, the most fun things to do in Mow Cop are "Walking downhill, or having a pint outside the Cheshire View pub on a summer's evening!

Worst Things:

Fossil says "the worst thing about Mow Cop is that if you want to walk it's always uphill!"

Here are some of your thoughts

Marian Simlo nee Sarson
I heard on Radio 4 a piece by John Waite on Mow Cop and was quite enthralled by it. Living in Scholar Green, as I did when I was an evacuee during the war, I had to do the big climb to the castle and then alone the top to Woodcocks Well School. It was quite a climb but very rewarding during the "bilberry season"!

did you know that clarice cliff in 1937 painted a scene on a Lynton shape coffee set and the pattern is registered as “mow cop”

Dr Nick Ashley
As a lad I went to Newcastle-under'Lyme High school and took a trip out to Mow Cop to go fossil hunting in the quarry. This is where I found my first fossils, shells and a tree root from the Carboniferous period. Climbed up to the castle and found some barites mineral. It will always have a sentimental value for me.
