Staffordshire oatcake

Ode to an Oatcake

By Joan Welsh, site user.
Oatcake lover's all over Staffordshire will love this verse in honour of our beloved Oatcake!

The "Staffordshire Oatcake Recipe Book" produced for the New Vic Theatre appeal in 1980 has in it a very interesting verse called 'Ode to the Oatcake' - as Joan Welsh recites to us here...

Ode to the Oatcake

"Let us pay homage to the Oatcake
Or Oatcake or woodcake as the old men called them.

The oatcake is not a cake at all really
Not like the fairy cake or the Eccles cake

Not a cake in that way
More of a Potteries Papadum

A sort of Tunstall Tortilla
A Clay Suzette."

I wonder why Arthur Berry didn't use rhyme?

A solumn warning..

I don't think the following is part of the ode but he added it on as a "solemn warning"!

"If over indulged in
both these cakes can play the very Devil with your waistline.
I must WARN!
INDULGENCE leads to BULGENCE!"
