| | | Staffordshire Spiritual Places: Gawton's Well | | | |
| | The Spiritual Places campaign was your chance to nominate a special place that has a significant spiritual meaning to you.
The Rev Paul Davies from Norton chose Gawton's Well near Knypersley Pool, in the Staffordshire Moorlands area, as his special place... | | | | Gawtons Well
During the summer of 2003, we at BBC Staffordshire have been searching for favourite local spiritual places.
The nation as a whole chose Walsingham, the village in Norfolk with two shrines to Our Lady, one Roman Catholic and one Anglican. However, the final choices of special spiritual place in Staffordshire came down to: Deep Hayes Country Park; Hanley Park; the canal at Audlem; and Gawton's Well in the Moorlands.
In the end, it was Paul Davies' nomination - Gawton's Well - that seemed to fit the description, from all those nominated, the best.

The story of the well is that a man (Gawton?) was driven away from his village because of his disease, and lived as a hermit here. It's claimed that his later cure came from drinking the water. It may be him that is remembered in Brown Edge church.
Later, the stones were built as baths, where the population came to use the medicinal waters from the spring. However, it can be difficult to find as it is not sign-posted.
"A very quiet place... spiritual and full of magic, with very old yew trees which cover you - a place of peace. You can even still drink the water." - Paul Davies
Nowadays, some New Age people see it as a source of energy.
