Sport Relief 2012 Total

The great British public have once again gone the extra mile by raising a staggering £62,519,216 so far for Sport Relief 2012 – making it the most successful Sport Relief fundraising campaign to date.
The money raised will now be used to change countless lives for the better, helping people living incredible tough lives both here in the UK and across the world’s poorest countries.
This year’s event saw more than one million men, women and children take part in the Sport Relief Mile, with a record number of people taking to the streets on Sunday 25th March at hundreds of Mile events across the length and breadth of the country.
A whole host of famous faces also took part including Prime Minister David Cameron, HRH Prince Harry and JLS running the Mile. Even Her Majesty The Queen attended a Sport Relief Mile in Salford.
Friday 23rd March saw a night of top telly on the BBC, raising millions of pounds thanks to the generosity of the viewers.
Highlights from the star studded TV show included Kate Moss making a guest appearance in an Absolutely Fabulous sketch, an Outnumbered special featuring Christine Bleakley and Frank Lampard, Miranda Hart playing tennis at the Albert Hall in a Sport Relief special, and for the first time ever, Strictly Come Dancing underwater.
An incredible £6.1m was raised by the Sport Relief Challenges, which saw a number of determined celebrities take on gruelling physical challenges to raise money for Sport Relief 2012. This total includes over £1.3m raised by BBC Radio 1 listeners.
David Williams completed the toughest challenge of his life in Walliams vs The Thames, swimming 140 miles of the Thames in just eight days – raising over £2.5m in the process.
Bishop’s Week of Hell saw John Bishop cycle, row and run over 295 miles from Paris to London in five days and raise more than £4m. Flintoff’s Record Breakers saw Freddie Flintoff set 14 Guinness World records in just 12 hours to raise cash for Sport Relief.
On hearing the amount that Sport Relief has raised so far, John Bishop said: "Thanks to all those who got behind the campaign, the latest record-breaking Sport Relief total is just incredible.
"When I was asked to take on a challenge for Sport Relief, I’ve got to admit, I wasn’t keen. But after seeing the great work that’s happening in Sierra Leone, it was pretty hard to say no. The money raised will mean a lifetime of difference to people who really need it."
