Speaking on the BBC Super League Show, Waite said that Cunningham might have recovered from injury in time, but will not be ready to take on the Kangaroos. "Keiron hopes to be playing by 4 July against Hull, but he'll be concentrating on being ready to help St Helens win some honours," Waite said. "Then later in the year he'll be ready for the main task of the season, which is to win the Test series against New Zealand in November."
Cunningham's place in the Lancashire Origin side announced today was taken by Wigan hooker Terry Newton. Waite is particularly pleased by how many young stars have made the two Origin squads. "We have 17 players eligible for the Under-21 squad out of 40 players chosen for Yorkshire and Lancashire. They are the future for Great Britain and they are getting the chance to prove themselves at the next level up from Super League." The Origin series kicks off on Friday night at the JJB Stadium, with the second fixture at Headingley a week on Tuesday.
