There were few more welcome sights in tennis last year than the return of Davenport after an eight-month lay-off due to injury.
The three-time Grand Slam winner showed encouraging signs of the form which took her to world number one and the break appeared to have renewed her enthusiasm for the sport.
At 6ft 2in, Davenport combines a massive serve with an array of penetrating groundstrokes - the only weakness being her movement.
Having taken the title in 2000, Davenport is one of the few players in the women's field to have experienced the winning feeling in Melbourne before.
