Australia's Lleyton Hewitt ensured an early Davis Cup victory over India on Saturday as he teamed up in the doubles with Todd Woodbridge.

The Australian pair were too strong for Leander Paes and newcomer Vishaal Uppal, who they defeated 6-3 7-6 6-1 in the Cup qualifier.

The win ensured the final two singles matches on Sunday would be dead rubbers.

Hewitt said: "I felt like we raised our game at the right time. The second set could have gone either way.

"Playing singles throughout the year, it makes it extremely tough for me to play a lot of doubles matches on the tour.

"But I love playing the big doubles matches."

The Australian pairing made an immediate mark on the contest in Aledaide, quickly going a break up to comfortably win the first set.

The Indians hit back in the second before Uppal double faulted while serving on set point.

From there, Hewitt and Woodbridge easily rounded off the match.
