Interesting to see how the Hoddle myopics (the youngsters I'd guess) have tended to clam up since Spurs have proven - as they always do - that they are as average as average can be. Hoddle continues to be the choice of the romantics. I'd give up forever the old nonsense about 'the Spurs way of playing football' for consistently winning, a decent back four and some pots on the sideboard. Spurs need a decent front two - Sheringham doesn't score enough goals. We need Keane and Vassell. Also, Poyet, Anderton, Sherwood and Freund should be sold. We need to follow Newcastle's example and buy good young players with the pace, flair and skill to take this club forward.
Well, we were never going to beat the Gooners were we? But where was the passion that you normally get in north London derbies? It was a dreadful performance - much the same as we saw at Sunderland the previous week. Just one burning question - why doesn't Glenn use Rebrov? He's such a talented payer who continues to score week in week out for the reserves. I can't understand it. Why not put him in Sheringham's role & have Keane up front? As another long suffering Spurs fan I get tired of people asking for us to get a "25 goal a season" man. Where are they then? And more importantly, why should they come to Spurs? No United or Gooner striker has come up with 25 goals a season - a feat not achieved since the days of Lineker or Clive Allen. To make matters worse, we won't even be able to hold on to our better players. They will soon tire of mid-table mediocrity and cup exits to Burnley etc. No, not another defeatist - just a realist. Hoddle has great tactical nous and I've always been a fan of the player, but he seems to have difficulty managing personalities. Why hasn't Rebrov fitted in? Any other team would be happy to have him, and get results from him at that. I think the early season form was a mask for the terrible ineptitude we have throughout the team. We are woefully short in class and bite in midfield. Can't wait for king to come back to partner Richards at the back (Perry is just not good enough). Anderton needs to be cashed in on very soon. Poyet is too old, and Sheringham may only have one more season left in him. Why doesn't Glenn put his differences with Rebrov behind him and play him up front with Robbie?
The same old moans are coming out again, because basically, the same old Spurs team is out there again, and it comes out year after year. We need to start improving and quickly, otherwise we will be staring at bottom half. P.S. Can anyone tell me what David Pleat actually does at N17? If the Spurs faithful have not been able to admit it, then they must start now. The main problem with Spurs is Hoddle. He has no real track record and you can see that when he is under pressure or the opposing team coach makes a change of tactics he just does not have a clue. Furthermore, he has totally wasted a very talented player in Rebrov. Unfortunately, Tottenham are going absolutely nowhere under the present coach. The sooner this is admitted and prompt action taken, the sooner the club can find a proper replacement who knows what he's doing. The problem with our ascent to the top at the start of the season is that expectations went with it. The squad is better than last season but youth means having to endure defeats like yesterday before we can compete with the top teams. Patience is not a virtue amongst Spurs fans, especially those of us that can remember teams that used to challenge for the top places but let's get behind the team...now more than ever. If that was the best effort Tottenham players could give in the north London derby, their Cup final, then serious questions have to be asked of the commitment of the players and management.
What a shambles. The Gooners may well have beaten us anyway but it would have been nice to have an even chance. The Gooner ref should be relegated. Simon Davies should never have been sent off. And what happened to the yellow cards for Sol the Splitter for that disgusting challenge on Redknapp and that obvious foul by Ljungberg on Redknapp for the second goal? I thought tackling from behind was illegal in the modern game? It's time for Spurs to stop worrying about not scoring goals and sort out that awful defence. We had enough of that "score more than them" attitude with Ardiles and Gross in charge. We already know it doesn't work. We've conceded more than anyone else except the bottom two and that's relegation form. We're not too big a club to avoid it. Kasey's a brilliant keeper this season but he can't do it all on his own. Davies didn't foul Cole but neither did he dive - he jumped out of the way and got up immediately. Shocking refereeing was what got him sent off, not Cole. It wouldn't have affected the result anyway, the Gooners were a class apart... Well Joe Forster (below), you thought we Spurs supporters were a bit premature about our poor performances of late. We've just lost 3-0 to the Gooners. Still feel like we're heading in the right direction? I don't. I get this every year, and to be honest I am bored with mid-table mediocrity. I am no longer going to waste my money on anything to support Spurs. It's a waste of my hard earned, cash and the players earn shed loads more than I do.
Sadly, Hoddle is leading the Spurs decline even earlier this season than last. We had our 24hrs of fame with leadership of the Premiership back in August, and now it's downhill again. As a long suffering Spurs fan I know we deserve better than this. Glenn must let the youth prosper (Davies, Etherington) but also needs to get a top quality player into midfield (to replace Freund, Anderton, Poyet, Sherwood etc, etc) and someone up front who can score 25-plus goals. I still think our defence is dodgy. We still leak some silly goals through basic errors. This costs us games and points. I also feel we are weak in midfield. When Redknapp or Anderton are missing we are very weak, no invention. We need some real quality in there not run-of-the-mill players. The way the club have treated Rebrov is a disgrace. It only appears to be a personality clash between Glenn and Rebrov. Come on lads, grow up and sort it out. This would never happen at any other clubs. I can't help thinking we will beat Arsenal on Saturday. And Glenn, let Etherington start the game, him and Davies are our two best players. Tottenham have the potential to be one of the best teams in the Premiership, its just about time the players started believing in themselves. I can't believe the reaction after a couple of bad games. Alright, out of the Worthy Cup and beaten by a team in the lower part of league, but come on, remember Arsenal recently had a bad patch over four games but I didn't hear any of this squabble.
Keep positive and hopefully that will reflect on the pitch. Alright, Arsenal have a lot more a quality, so a few games lost is no big deal, as they have already qualified. But as Blackburn showed, no team are unbeatable. So COME ON YOU SPURS, beat Arsenal and then let's see what you supposed loyal supporters say! You'll be talking Champions League again. PS Glenn, please do not play Poyet on the left, get Ethers on and we will have a proper balance to the team! So absolutely typical of Spurs - all the high hopes one had for this season seems to have withered away with such a pathetic performance against Sunderland. I wonder how they'll cope against Arsenal next week... I say this with regret, but I hope Tottenham sell Rebrov in January. As a quality player he should be playing first team football - especially with his Champions League background. I do not agree with the way Glenn has handled our strikers. What's the point of having so many strikers if you're not going to use them? There isn't any competition for places up front at Spurs, and Rebrov deserved a better chance. All the best Rebrov. Tottenham don't have the financial power or the big players to achieve a top four position. I feel that Chelsea and Liverpool are too strong for us, and we should set our goal on the top 10.
Dumped out of the Worthy Cup and beaten by the second bottom team in the space of a fortnight! Is everybody sure we are still heading in the right direction? We seem to be creating a stack of chances, without actually scoring. I can't help wondering whether Rebrov wouldn't be a little more adept at sticking them away than some of our first team strikers - if we weren't getting rid of him that is! Watch the inexorable slide down to the customary mediocrity of mid-table. If Freund is serious about a top six position then Spurs had better replace their coach before it is too late. Once again, we've underachieved against lesser opposition. We desperately need another top quality striker that can score goals and fit in to our style of play - someone like Francis Jeffers or Malcolm Christie. The midfield also needs a genuine ball winner, because Steffen Freund isn't up to the job and it's still going to be a while before Stephen Clemence comes back from injury. Les Ferdinand, Tim Sherwood and Sergei Rebrov should be sold in order to raise funds for new acquisitions. Regarding Glenn Hoddle, I think he's been the best acquisition in recent years. Being an intelligent man and having a modern approach to the game, he's the man to take Spurs to the next level. So stop the criticism and get behind him. Sounds like all the positive comments are a little to early. Beaten by Burnley, and now Sunderland- one of the worst teams in the Premiership. We flatter to deceive - AGAIN.
After our pathetic 2-0 defeat to Sunderland, I find it difficult to see us doing anything this season. We are still inconsistent and all the hype this season will come to nothing yet again. So far so good. The team have been both fortunate against lesser opposition, although unlucky when visiting Old Trafford and Anfield. Suggestions of a slump by Rodney Marsh are ridiculous considering the amount of first team players coming back from injury! Finally, Spurs are starting to look and play like the teams of the glory days. We've got to hold onto Etherington and Davies, and clear the old liabilities that are hindering our progress, players such as Les Ferdinand and Tarrico. After an encouraging start to the season, the team will face a tough examination in the coming weeks. The performance v Liverpool (though not the result) gives grounds for optimism. The foundations for European football at WHL next season - and consistently achieving top six - are evident, with pace and youth up front and arguably the best defence since the days of Perryman and Mabbutt.
I am intrigued about the Rebrov business. I wonder if he is on a pay per play or a fee based on appearances and ENIC can't afford him? The club should publicly come clean, even if the reason is unpalatable. How many other public companies would allow an 11m asset to remain unused for months? Rebrov's dignity in suffering this treatment is a credit to his professionalism. Another good performance, but no cigar! It would be nice to start turning these good performances into points in the bank. A similar display against Chelsea is an absolute must. PLEASE guys, DON'T let this ordinary team of journeymen and mercenaries plunder the points again. Simon Davies is our own Ryan Giggs he has flair and ability to run our wings and it is good to see we have many players coming back from injury, looks to be a bright future for Spurs. It's a great start to the season but we should not get carried away. Great signing in Keane, but I feel this could be a little of a one-season wonder unless we clear out some of the older and lesser players and replace them with a bit of quality. The money needs to be spent soon to keep us up in the top six. Anything lower I think will be a big disappointment.
Robbie Keane, WOW. 7m, what a bargain. I saw the passion in his eyes first hand when he scored his first goal at home against Bolton. He is a Tottenham hero of the future. He will give us 110% week in week out and we'll love him for it. Talking of passion, Stefan (SHOOOOT) Freund, what a star. Glenn Hoddle DO NOT SELL SIMON DAVIES, the offer will come, it's inevitable. That boy is priceless. It's depressing just how negative many of the comments on this page are, when we haven't been out of the top six all season. Maybe it just goes to show that nothing is ever good enough for the average Spurs fan. Perhaps we could start showing some of the optimism that Glenn is renowned for? Keano is the man! Having watched the game yesterday I'm sure that with the way GHod has got the team playing (still missing four top-class players) it's looking good for European qualification this season. The defence was a bit sloppy for Bolton's goal but the overall performance and standard of passing was slick and we deserved the points.
And nice to see young Evertonian Rooney put one past the Gooners. What was that you were saying about being unbeatable this season Mr Wenger? As if! Ten games gone and third - not bad at all. And remember 1991 when the club nearly went down the pan because of our finances? It's taken a while and admittedly it'd be more 'interesting' to have signed a Rivaldo or another big name, but the kids are coming good - Keane, Davies, Etherington, Carr, and King and Gardner yet to come back from injury. It's taken longer than some would've hoped, but we're definitely on the right track. Stick with a 4-4-2 and sign Jurica Vranjes in the Jan. transfer window! I was at Sunday's game against Bolton and it was different team from the one which capitulated against Boro. The atmosphere in the ground was the best I can remember for a very long time - it can be deathly silent in the Lane at times. Carr was excellent, Keane neat and skilful and as for the Welsh Wizard Simon Davies - we have unearthed a real star. There is a genuine air of expectation this season. We will still put in a few duff performances and won't challenge for the very top - but we will be competitive and great entertainment. Well, a quarter of the season has gone and we're third. I doubt any real Spurs fan can complain with the advances we've made so far. With the injuries decimating both the defence and midfield at the start of the season we've got through it all with some good victories.
Now the midfield is coming back (Poyet and Anderton) and the defence is on its way (King and Carr). Best of all a new, fast, scoring striker has arrived to compliment out speed from Etherington and guile of Davies and Sheringham. If we can keep all of the above together for the next six months we could go far. Let's not get carried away - next month will be a huge test (Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Leeds all ahead) but they CAN be beaten. So, let's support the team and the management, stop moaning, and come January remind Mr Levy that he promised to strengthen the squad in the next window. However, things are looking up! Quality result for the boys yesterday. Just think, when we get Ledley, Ziege, and Anderton fit too! For first time in ages, we'll actually have a quality pool of players to choose from. I think between us and Chelsea, fourth place is up for grabs. If only Simon Davies was English, the boy is a legend. The comments from 'Hugh MacCamley, Brunei' about Hoddle being a 'mediocre coach' - does he wants us to go and get somebody with all the current coaching qualifications? Say, like Howard Wilkinson! I don't think so. Hoddle has turned round nearly all the teams he has managed. I have been to WHL a few times this season and we playing well and more importantly playing the right way. The Spurs way.
I was pleased to see Tottenham get back on track with wins against Blackburn, Cardiff and now Bolton. I think Robbie Keane will be a great asset, as Spurs badly needs a 20 goals a season-striker. The service to him from midfield is there, as we are now a pass and move team, unlike when "Gunner" Graham was in charge! I like the shape of Hoddle's team and approve of (most of) his tactics. I still think we need to buy another defender though and I would like Spurs to buy a quality centre-back, ie Jaap Stam. Otherwise, I agree with many other supporters here. Don't be so fickle and moan etc. Let's get behind the lads and give the new boys a decent chance. If the squad continues to grow and there is strength in depth, then injuries will not keep sapping us of our top players, such as Steve Carr, Darren Anderton and Gus Poyet. Carr and Poyet both played today and had decent games! Well done Tottenham! Well done Spurs! New boys (for instance, Robbie Keane) keep getting better and better. And Simon Davies in sparkling form. Injured players coming back - Gus Poyet! So watch out Premiership - Spurs are coming. Congratulations to Glenn and the boys for getting great results with a depleted squad. When the likes of Anderton, Carr and King return the first team will even harder to beat. Come on Tottenham.....let's get into Europe.
I think Spurs have been very lucky with their run of opening fixtures. Our midfield is amongst the weakest in the league and the lack of genuine class ball-winners will be exposed when we play the top teams. The Middlesbrough game highlighted the lack of coherence in midfield. Good start! But can anyone tell me why we have half of the team on the injury list every season? We need more agility training! I see as usual the only happy Spurs fan is a moaning Spurs fan. Grow up and respect that we not only have a man who is Tottenham through and through, but we have had the best start to the season for such a long time. Spurs (ENIC) have coughed up 7m to buy Robbie Keane. One step at a time guys! My one gripe is why Rebrov can't get a kick...he is a truly talented player....give him a chance, Glenn. |
