Why were top Africans so poor?
A number of African sides put up poor performances in midweek friendlies.

What do you blame this on?

Have your say

Cameroon had a nasty shock in their first international game since the World Cup finals in Japan.

Results
Senegal 0-1 Morocco
Egypt 1-4 Denmark
Algeria 1-3 Belgium
Libya 2-4 Canada
Mali 1-0 Guinea
Tunisia 1-0 Sweden
Cameroon 0-3 I. Coast
On a cold Tuesday night in France, they lost 3-0 to the Elephants of Ivory Coast.

Meanwhile Senegal's Dakar Lions lost to Morocco in their first match under Guy Stephan, and Algeria were beaten by Belgium in their debut under George Leekens.

Egypt were completely overwhelmed by Denmark after taking the lead, while Libya lost to Canada, who are hardly one of the world's strongest sides.

The only bright spot was Tunisia - who finally ended their miserable run with a 1-0 win over Sweden.

Are top sides in decline? Or is there a re-emergence of talent elsewhere?

Have your say

It is payback time! It is not surprising that Senegal lost to Morocco, the team facinated us in the 98 World Cup and still has young players like commandos, ready to beat the unbeaten.
Youssef Aktam, Florida, USA

Algeria are a spent force, Egypt are strugglers but Cameroon are fast going downhill

Alick Simungala, Zambia
It is not true to say that Africa's top sides did not do well. Only when Nigeria play can you say that Africa's top sides were in action.
Patrick, South Africa

I have faith in the Indomitable Lions, it's just a matter of time - the boys will do better. The coach needs to get Lauren back in the team. We are still the giants of African football, Nigeria and Senegal are no match for us, we can still beat them any time, anywhere.
Jude Ngongang, USA/Cameroon

Let's face it. Algeria are a spent force, Egypt are strugglers but Cameroon are fast going down hill. Even their top players can only boast of names. For instance Patrick Mboma can no longer attract top European sides, Rigobert Song looks to be on the decline while the brilliant Lauren has called it quits. Coach Winfried Schaffer has also failed to cure the far East World Cup disease.
Alick Simungala, Zambia

Losing to Morocco is a disaster

Mayecor, England
Cameroon apparently has not landed since the Olympic and the African double despite the Korea/Japan debacle. The boys appear to have nothing to play for. They are plagued by low morale, and a lack of both focus and enthusiasm. As for Senegal, the absence of some key players may have counted but Morocco are no pushovers in their field. Egypt as a national team has faltered greatly lately though they have arguably the best league sides on the continent. They need to harness that club continental form into the national squad.
Tony, Cameroon

In football as in all things in life, there is always a transition phase. Good players come and they get old and retire and their teams have to rebuild with new players. This is what Nigeria is going through. Our team of the mid-90's is old and we are incorporating a new generation of players. This rebuilding always results in somewhat of a slump in form as the new players find themselves and gain experience. Nigeria is not finished - we are just reloading as one does with an empty gun before firing again. Watch out for the new and improved Super Eagles in years to come. We will fly over Africa again.
Ndubueze Onyike, Nigerian in USA

If Cameroon don't change and change drastically, then there's more huge surprises in store for us

Hope Fonbah, Cameroon/USA
Senegal were unlucky to lose to Cameroon in the Nations Cup final. This was proved during the World Cup where our run was magnificent. But losing to Morocco is a disaster, although I think that this team is too strong not to bounce back. Well done to Morrocco, you have just beaten the 2004 African champions
Mayecor, England

Congratulations to the Elephants for a job well done. We must rely on past glories and face reality. Well must accept that football is evolving and no country whatsoever should be taken lightly. That is a wakeup call for Cameroon and if we don't change and change drastically, then there's more huge surprises in store for us.
Hope Fonbah, Cameroon/USA

I don't think Ivory Coast's defeat over Cameroon is a shock, and neither is Moroco's win over Senegal. Ivory Coast is a great team and should not be underrated when they are playing a team like Cameroon. They are playing with skill and good management. Remember back in the days when the Black Stars of Ghana were the sharks in Afrcan football, the Elephants where the only team they couldn't beat easily.

For Senegal, I think they are overrated. This team is new to fame in African football and needed to be given the chance in four years to prove its worth. What hasn't happened before? Once mighty Zambia did it in 1994 as they made it to the finals against Nigeria. Today where do they stand?
Cephas Laryea, USA

It is a good thing for Africa that we now have strong teams emerging to give Nigeria and Cameroon a good run for their money

O. Popoola, UK
It is a bit harsh to say that Cameroon is in decline. When it counts, the Lions come through. Besides, if there's any nation that needs something to smile about right now, it's the Ivory Coast.
Francis, England

Indeed, Cameroon and Nigeria are in decline. Watch out for the newcomers!
Zakaria, Morocco

It is a good thing for Africa that we now have strong teams emerging to give Nigeria and Cameroon a good run for their money. One should not argue that Cameroon did not play well,. The fact of the matter is that the Ivorians were a better side.
O. Popoola, U.K.

Cameroon handed them this win to make them happy, as a result of the brutal war that has destroyed a peace loving country like the Ivory Coast. They should prepare for the real Cameroon next time.
Gasimu, USA/Cameroon

This win is surely proof that there is no underdog in modern football. Countries can no longer rely on past glories. Well done Ivory Coast!
Richard Gyasi, Ghana

I don't really think Cameroon is in decline. However this is a rude awakening. Football has been on the ascent in other African countries and Cameroon cannot take their opponents for granted. The coach must use better tactics and use the best players. Perhaps he should get Kalla and Lauren back in the team.
Tony, Cameroon

I think Cameroon and other top African teams like Nigeria and Senegal are on top. But many African teams have been improving as well.
Tati, Ghana

This defeat is a shame. Cameroon is losing its reputation as legends in African football. WE HAVE TO WAKE UP.
Daniel, USA

I think Cameroon got extremely full of themselves after the last two Nations Cups. That showed in their terrible form at the last World Cup. They obviously thought they could not be beaten.
Mohamed, Egypt

As a Nigerian, I never liked the Indomitable Lions, but I'm really sorry for them. They should have learnt their lesson(s) after winning the African Nations Cup so easily. In the World Cup, it seemed as if they thought all they had to do was turn up to get to the second round. My advice to the Lions is they should start rebuilding now! And, oh, don't even think of defending your title again next year!!!
Nazif, Nigeria

Obviously, there is a lack of enthusiasm amongst the players. This team will continue to decline unless new talents from within the country or from around Europe are introduced into the team. Let's wait and see what coach Schaefer is going to do.
Emmanuel Bilikha, USA

It's just only one defeat. This was the Indomitable Lion's first game since their disappointing World Cup appearance. They are a strong team and will bounce back as usual.
Seltue Karweaye, Liberia
