| Friday, 4 October, 2002, 12:02 GMT 13:02 UK Salute the Roosters and Brad Fittler ![]() The Sydney Roosters win the NRL Grand Final to earn coach Ricky Stuart glory in his first year as a coach, and hand captain Brad Fittler the honour of winning every trophy in the game. Send your congratulations to the Roosters, Stuart and Fittler. This debate is now closed. The Roosters went 8-6 down early in the second half, but played brilliantly in the final quarter to break the Warriors' resistance and win their first title since 1975. The minor premiership champions were aiming to become the first New Zealand side to take the title, but they were simply torn apart by the Sydney side. Captain Fittler retired from the international game to concentrate on the NRL, and he inspired his side to victory despite taking a heavy blow to the head in the second half. Whether it's to celebrate or commiserate, send us your verdict on the NRL Grand Final. Heartbreaking for any red-blooded Kiwi but what a pulsating final! You could feel the excitement with players wearing their hearts on their sleeves. I felt bad for Fittler after that tackle and then the head clash with Villasanti left him injured. But he showed what a champion he is to take the game out of the Roosters half and break the NZ Warriors spirits. The Warriors had the whole country behind them and that was something magical in itself. Great final - shame the Bulldogs, the true champions didn't play. But the Roosters did the job and did it well. Let's wait for a Roosters v Wigan world play-off. Well done to the Roosters. The players are a great credit to the club and all that they aim to achieve. Adrian Morely was the man of the match for me. He put in an outstanding performance to lead the "Chucks" home to victory. Well done to the Roosters and all the Eastern Suburbs supporters.
What a magnificent performance by every Roosters player. Morley, Fitzgibbon and Wing were stars, but Brad Fittler really won the game. A great 40/20 when it seemed the Roosters couldn't get out of their own half and then a magnificent reply to what was clearly an intentional headbutt as he lay on the ground. The Roosters were awesome on the day and I'm pleased for Fittler, Adrian Morley and Sydney, but like last year, it epitomises why I don't like the play-off system. Parramatta lost having romped to the title in 2001. This year (even excluding Canterbury) Auckland, Brisbane and Newcastle all won considerably more matches than Sydney. There would have been outrage if Arsenal were not Premiership winners last year and Chelsea won instead after winning an end of season tournament. Nor would you get Lennox Lewis to fight a lesser bloke, after winning the World Title, just to be champion. Poor Kiwis, who's eating humble pie now? Not even 15,000 free tickets could save the Warriors. Go Roosters! The most exciting game I've watched yet! Fittler was fantastic! What a game! Well done Roosters, nice to see Morley back in the swing of things and hopefully we will see more Brits going down under to prove themselves.
A great game. Several candidates for the Clive Churchill medal: Brad Fittler and Stacey Jones were outstanding - it would be a bit scary if they ever played in the same team. The hard-hitting Adrian Morley joined a very select band of British NRL Grand Final winners. Now let's see the Kiwis take revenge in Saturday's Test match! A great game, and a lot closer than the final score suggests. Fittler's second half performance was superb, and the Roosters fully deserved the win. A great performance to win the Grand Final from fourth. Well done too to Adrian Morley - he's had a lot of bad luck with injuries but has proven he is a world-class player. I am 32 years old and a lifelong Roosters fan. The game was shown live here and I have just finished shedding tears of joy. I have waited my whole life for this and the passion of the players after the game mirrored that of their many loyal supporters. Thank you Roosters for a wonderful experience! Congratulations the Roosters! Thank goodness the Kiwis didn't win the title or we wouldn't have heard the last of it for a very long time. Fittler or, 'Freddie' as he is known, certainly had a game to remember, playing an integral part of this fantastic game. But certainly the man who did truly deserve man of the match got it - Craig Fitzgibbon - what a champion! There are many reasons why I loathe the Roosters, but I think that they have deserved this Premiership. It's also good to see a different team win the comp, as opposed to just seeing Brisbane and Canterbury play seemingly every Grand Final. |
