Is Libya the right move for Mboma?
Patrick Mboma
Cameroon striker Patrick Mboma has made a surprise move away from Parma to Libyan club Al Ittihad.

Is it the right move for Mboma?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Mboma will be one of the most high-profile footballers playing his club football in Africa when he makes his debut on Saturday.

His move is on the back of a poor 2002, where he was relegated to the bench at Parma, loaned to Sunderland and then released, and suffered - along with the rest of Cameroon - an early exit from the World Cup.

But it was only in 2000 that he scored 15 goals in 32 matches in Serie A, and has been one of the top scorers at the African Nations Cup two years running.

Is it too soon for Mboma to take the money and run?

Or does his transfer signal that African football is becoming ever more competetive?

What do you think of Mboma's move?

HAVE YOUR SAY

Mboma has made a big mistake. I dont agree he is past his prime... his move to Libya will just kill off what is left of his career. Bad advice by his manager/agent.
China Acheru, Nigeria

I think Mboma has made the worst move of his career. God help him.
Emeka Nwani, Nigeria

Mboma is way past his prime and no major club in Europe would be willing to sign him on. This move is the best for him within the prevailing circumstances.
Ben, Jamaica

African football needs people like Mboma
Petro Mohamed, Tanzania
Its a good move, he was not being given room to excel at Sunderland and Parma. He also needs to get the money to support his brood.
Nico, Kenya

African football needs people like Mboma as he has played good soccer in Europe. At that age it is right time to come home and help upcoming African footballers to go professional worldwide. We welcome the likes of Mboma to play a part in developing our soccer.
Petro Mohamed, Tanzania

Good move. After years of hard work, you have to find a good place to earn money and admiration. Mboma has already done his asignment for Cameroon and African football. Let him now relax by playing in a light league where he will be worshipped and make his retirement most enjoyable. Brilliant move Patrick!
Waziri Mrisho, Tanzania

Sunderland do not have two strikers deadlier than Mboma - they missed out
Daniel George, USA
Mr. Mboma won't lose a thing by going back to his root football. On the contrary, he will be more attractive at Alittihad.
Takmak Mohamed, Libya

Nobody really doubts the talents that the man brings to the table. He is by no means a has-been and can still contribute at a top club. Better to be playing regularly in Libya than sit on the bench in Italy (just ask USA coach Bruce Arena). That one does not ply his trade in the big European countries does not denote lack of talent. By the way, Sunderland does not have two strikers deadlier than Mboma on their books. They missed out.
Daniel George, USA

A very lazy player like Mboma should actually have no problems playing in Libya
Roger Mana, Germany
Mboma is a very talented player. I think what he has to do now is prove during the African Nations Cup and World Cup 2006 that this move made him stronger than ever.
Daniel, USA

A very lazy player like Mboma should actually have no problems playing in Libya. He has mearly gone to where he belongs.
Roger Mana, Germany.

That Mboma has pitched his tent with a Libyan side goes to show that he can no longer cope with the pace of the modern game, as was evident during his brief spell with Sunderland. All in all, he has proved his mettle despite being a late starter at the international level, thanksto his briliant display in the J-league. Good luck to him in Libya.
Oluwashina Okeleji, Nigeria

This is just the worst move of the year if not decade
Eze Kamanu, USA
I am very happy that he has made a move to play back in Africa because many clubs in Europe don't want to take a risk on him but after this seasons they will be chasing him to come back and play in Europe.
Bigge, Chad

It's totally sad that a high profile player like Mboma is ending his career this way. What in the world is he going to gain from Libya? It would be more honorable and beneficial if he ended up in a Serie C side. This is just the worst move of the year if not decade.
Eze Kamanu, USA

I can't blame Mboma for this move. By the way he is coming to the end of his career, and he needs the money to support his family. He also expressed interest in the African Champions League, so I feel this will make it more exciting should Al Ittihad qualify.

I also feel Mboma is opening the door for other African great footballers to someday comeback to the motherland and end their careers. He has done all of us Cameroonians proud. He won all that there is to win with Cameroon, but for the World Cup. May the Almighty truly guide him as he moves forward with his career.
John Abam, USA

I could understand Mboma heading back to Africa to play somewhere like Egypt, Tunisia or South Africa - but Libya?! The country has no footballing pedigree at all. Its obvious that cash talks in football and there can be no other reason why a talanted striker such as Mboma chose to play his football there.
Yaf, Manchester, UK

Mboma is an overrated has-been
Z, UK
It is time we get our players back. We are in the 21st century and things have changed. Africa needs her sons to shine regardless where in Africa, it doesn't matter. Mboma is home anywhere on the soil of Africa.
Pierre Kablan, USA

He has nothing to prove. He had a good career and brillant last few years. At 32 he better play for more money and plan retirement. He could have stayed in Serie A with Chievo and so forth if he wanted but, good move.
Dan, USA

African football need to go forward. I believe that the coming back home of Mboma signifies good things for African football and the Champions League in particular.
Ndu, Nigeria

This is a good move for Mboma, especially with all the financial uncertainty in Serie A. Al Ittihad is an ambitious team and the African Champions League is a very serious competition.
Chiemezie Amadi, Nigeria

I'm not the least bit surprised at all. All the agents and coaches talk about geting this player or that player but hesitate to spend the money. I undrstand Mboma has four kids to feed and a new born baby. If that's not enough motivation to play in Africa then I don't know what is. At 32 years of age I don't think he has anything to prove to anyone. Besides, he has been living in France all his life.
Sola Orebe, UK

Mboma is an overrated has-been who was found out at Parma, Sunderland and the World Cup. This latest move signals his demise.
Z, Uk
