| Sunday, 2 February, 2003, 17:50 GMT Tykes shut out Shoguns
Leeds finally ended their four-week wait for a win by defeating Bristol in a close encounter at the Memorial Stadium. The double over the Shoguns sees Leeds climb back up to third spot in the Zurich Premiership. Bristol, whose four-and-a-half month unbeaten home run was broken, managed to hold on to a valuable bonus point. The Shoguns made all the early running but were unable to breach the Tykes try line.
Fly-half Felipe Contepomi also missed two of his three penalty attempts, all from similar positions, in the opening 15 minutes. Leeds forced their way into the game just before the half-hour mark after a series of scrums five metres from the Shoguns line. The visitors were awarded a string of penalties but always opted for the scrum.
At the eighth attempt to pack down, the Tykes were awarded a penalty try by referee Steve Lander and centre Braam van Straaten added the simple conversion. Leeds scored a second try five minutes before the break when number eight Isaac Feaunati, escaped a poor tackle from Jamie Williams to run over. Contepomi attempted to land his third penalty just before the break but the referee judged it had not gone over and Bristol went into the break trailing 14-9.
Bristol were unlucky not to have got back into the game as they had plenty of possession. Shoguns coach Peter Thorburn will have some questions to ask as his side seemed to lack support at the breakdown. Contepomi, kicking into an easing wind, added his fourth penalty to give Bristol hope but Leeds made sure of the points with a 20-metre drop goal from Gordon Ross. Bristol: Williams; Rees, Higgins, Gibson, Christophers; Contepomi, Pichot; Sheridan, Johnstone, White, Morgan, Brown, Salter, Oakley, Beattie. Leeds: Scarborough; Stanley, Davies, Van Straaten, Albanese; Ross, Dickens; Shelley, Regan, Kerr, Murphy, Palmer, Mather, Hyde, Feaunati. Referee: S Lander (RFU) |
