Sharks halt away day misery

Sale have ended their dire away record with a surprise victory over Wasps.

The Sharks arrived at Adams Park without a win away from Heywood Road this season but only just held off an injury-hit Wasps line-up.

Wasps fly-half Alex King and Sale scrum-half Nick Walshe shared a penalty apiece early on in the Premiership clash.

But it was King who was more readily turned to with the boot in the opening exchanges, with a further penalty and a conversion following the game's first try.

I am delighted we got the result although it was shoddy at times... but on reflection we deserved to win
Sale director of rugby
Nicj Mallinder
The former England international was called up for the spot kick when Shane Rosier darted past the Sharks defence from five metres out.

Walshe kept the visitors in the chase with another penalty and their cause was further helped in the 33rd minute with a try by Dean Schofield.

The bulky lock crossed the line from short distance reducing the deficit to just two points at the interval in the process.

We weren't good enough - one or two handling errors can be pretty costly

The Sharks upped the tempo of the game at the restart, Schofield's fellow lock Chris Jones going through undetected as Wasps' concentration faltered once more.

Walshe added a conversion and former league star Steve Hanley made the Sharks advantage even greater when he swept up a loose ball and sprinted over the line.

Walshe again made no mistake with his kick.

Van Gisbergen kept Wasps in the game to the final minutes with a faultless kicking display but Sharks effectively wrapped up the win with Mark Cueto's try seven minutes from time.
