Gareth Jenkins has vowed that there will be no repeat of last October's violent encounter when his Llanelli team tackle Welsh Premiership rivals Swansea at Stradey Park on Friday night. Swansea players Gavin Henson and Dean Thomas were sent off during an ill-tempered Celtic League clash between the clubs last October. Llanelli inflicted a record 62-6 defeat on the All Whites at Stradey Park that day. Scarlets coach Jenkins has called on everyone involved to ensure that rugby is the winner in the latest tussle between two of Welsh rugby's oldest adversaries. "As usual, the form book goes out of the window," said Jenkins. "These games are quite unique, and mean a lot to both sets of fans and players.
"That said, we are adamant that there won't be a repeat of the incidents that marred our last meeting. "We need the spirit and the passion, without the violence, in order to do justice to the occasion. "Of course, we are looking ahead to Europe and meeting Bourgoin in the Heineken Cup on Friday week, but this is a game in its own right. Long-term injury victim Matt Cardey provides a welcome boost to the Llanelli squad, returning as a replacement after keyhole surgery on his knee. Former Wales No 8 Scott Quinnell is also on bench duty following his recovery from bruised ribs. Wing Salesi Finau is unlikely to return in time for the resumption of the Scarlets' European campaign, but prop Martyn Madden should recover after further rest to his knee. Wayne Proctor will return from his mandatory three week lay-off for concussion after this weekend. Irish international Guy Easterby partners Wales No 10 Stephen Jones at half-back, while US Eagles star Dave Hodges gets the nod at No 8. There is likely to be another titantic clash at inside centre between Swansea's Scott Gibbs and opposite number Leigh Davies. For Swansea, Henson will definitely start at outside-half against the Scarlets, keeping Arwel Thomas on the bench. Swansea are without lock Andrew Farley (ankle) and wing Johnny Vaughton (hip) after both failed fitness tests. Another All Whites lock, James Griffiths, is also out after injuring a knee in the loss to Bridgend. Llanelli: Barry Davies; Mark Jones, Matthew J Watkins, Leigh Davies, Garan Evans; Stephen Jones, Guy Easterby; Iestyn Thomas, Robin McBryde, John Davies, Vernon Cooper, Chris Wyatt, Simon Easterby, Dafydd Jones, David Hodges. Swansea: Kevin Morgan; Matthew Robinson, Steve Winn, Scott Gibbs, Shaun Payne; Gavin Henson, Sam Cordingley; Darren Morris (capt), Christian Balshen, Ben Evans, Jonathan Thomas, John Slade, Dean Thomas, Colin Charvis, James Bater. |
