| Saturday, 14 September, 2002, 15:08 GMT 16:08 UK Newport self-destruct ![]() Newport crumbled after Jason Strange was benched Celtic League - Pool B Newport 25-31 Glasgow Newport were coasting towards their first victory of the season when they were shattered by a Glasgow onslaught in the final quarter of their Celtic League match on Saturday. The Scots scored 22 unanswered points in 13 minutes as Newport made the fatal mistake of taking their foot off the pedal.
Newport coach Leigh Jones, prematurely deciding the game was won, substituted five of his players. They included the half-back pairing of Jason Strange and Ofisa Tonu'u, who had largely controlled the game for the Black and Ambers. He could then only watch helplessly from the sidelines as Newport lost their cohesion, nerve, spirit and ultimitely the match. Glasgow's hero was Tommy Hayes, playing at centre instead of his normal outside-half position. The Cook Islander scored 21 points with a try, four penalties and two conversions.
It was his try and conversion which started the late avalanche and gave Glasgow the lead after they looked dead and buried when trailing 25-9. Two more tries followed by Stuart Moffat and Gordon Simpson as Newport were left still without a win after three friendlies and three Celtic League clashes. Earlier, nerves had appeared to be settled as they scored three tries themselves from Andy Powell, Jason Forster and Rod Snow. But all they had left at the end was a bonus point for keeping the margin of defeat to within seven points.
