Cardiss inspires Halifax win
Daryl Cardiss
Cardiss was the hero for Halifax
Halifax 16-11 Warrington

Transfer-listed full-back Daryl Cardiss was the Halifax hero as his last-minute try sealed an unlikely win for the home side at The Shay.

The Blue Sox trailed 10-0 with 17 minutes to go but a superb period of play which saw them score three tries without reply wrapped up a stunning success.

Earlier the Wolves had shaded a scrappy first half where a succession of basic errors by both sets of players meant points and chances were at a premium.

Halifax could have taken a second-minute lead when Leroy Rivett fumbled Karle Hammond's kick on the sixth, but video referee David Campbell decided Wolves' Michael Watts had touched it down first.

There is a very fine line between success and failure and we have ended up on the wrong side of it today
Wolves coach David Plange

Within a minute Wire centre Darren Burns was held up over the line before Halifax forward Jamie Bloem was sin-binned for a light dive on Watts.

But the visitors were unable to capitalise on their one-man advantage and were again grateful for Mr Campbell's intervention on 22 minutes.

This time Hammond's chip was caught by Jason Flowers who passed outside to the loose-forward who went in under the posts.

But referee Steve Ganson referred it upstairs and again the video official said no.

Two minutes later Wire finally broke through as the ball was moved wide by Sid Domic who found Danny Halliwell - on loan from the Sox to Wolves - and he touched down.

The centre did not appear to ground the ball but this time Ganson chose not to refer it to the video referee and awarded the try.

Lee Briers added two drop goals and two minutes after the restart a third, to keep Warrington in control.

Briers added a penalty and then landed drop goal number four before Blue Sox finally managed a score when Danny Tickle broke Watts' pass and raced over.

I can't remember a game in the last 18 months where we got any luck, but we got some today
Halifax coach Steve Linnane

Briers' fifth drop goal set a new Super League record but Halifax showed tremendous fighting spirit to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

First Colum Halpenny broke down the right and passed inside to David Woods who powered through the gap to score. Tickle's goal took the Sox to within a point.

With five minutes to go Halpenny thought he had won it but again the try was disallowed by Mr Campbell, this time for a Tickle knock-on.

But with two minutes to go Briers went from hero to villain kicking the ball straight out of play and gifting possession back to Halifax.

The home side took full advantage as Cardiss crossed for the winning try converted by Tickle to seal the victory.
