| Monk edges classic ![]() Monk found a way past O'Shea again Wednesday's Lakeside round-up Colin Monk edged out Tony O'Shea on Wednesday to book his place in the Embassy World Championship quarter-finals after an epic contest. At 5-5 in the deciding leg, the Basingstoke thrower nailed a double 16 to snatch victory. After a memorable duel between the pair last year, the capacity crowd at the Lakeside Country Club were expecting something special - and they were not disappointed.
"I'm a bit shattered," said Monk afterwards. "I know what it is like to lose in that situation and I just had to dig really deep. I'm over the moon to have won. O'Shea said: "Obviously I'm disappointed that I lost, but I did play well and didn't bottle it. Credit must go to Colin because he finished well at crucial times." In the night's other action, former world champion Raymond Barneveld thrashed qualifier John Burton 3-0. The Dutchman missed a couple of doubles at the start of the first set, but then took control of proceedings at Frimley Green to clinch a comfortable win. Barneveld, the world number two, rounded off an impressive display with a 12-darter to move into the last eight, where he will face Erik Clarys. "I played fast and hit the good averages tonight," said barneveld. "I'm in good form." Belgian Clarys overcame Robert Wagner 3-0 to advance. Wagner, a former bodybuilder from Austria who now lives in Norway, carried on where he left off against Gary Robson and quickly established a two-leg lead in the first. However, Clarys suddenly went into overdrive and reeled off the next three legs to win the opening set and kept his form to get the win. In the final match of the evening, last year's runner-up Mervyn King beat fellow Englishman Dennis Harbour 3-1. King will take on Monk next in a repeat of the semi-final of 12 months ago. |
