Frustrated White says sorry
Jimmy White trails Matthew Stevens 6-2
White has struggled to find his form

Jimmy White has apologised for his moment of madness at the World Championship in Sheffield.

The usually unflappable White lost his cool at the end of the first session of his second round match with Matthew Stevens.

The 39-year-old missed a black off the spot and then struck the cue-ball again, sending it into the black, which flew off the table.

"I would like to apologise for the way I reacted," White said in a statement.

"It was caused by sheer frustration and was completely out of character.

"I wish to apologise to Matthew, all my fans and the viewers on BBC television."

After the incident White turned to shake Stevens' hand to signal the end of the frame, despite being only 13 points behind with three reds still on the table.

That left the Londoner trailing 6-2 going into the interval.

Former champion Steve Davis was as baffled as anyone by the incident.

He said: "I don't know why he had to concede the frame.

"Jimmy's foul gave only seven points away and there was no guarantee that Matthew would win the frame from that position."

O'Sullivan opened a 6-2 lead over Milkins
O'Sullivan hit two centuries in the first three frames
White's performance was tentative throughout and his failure to pot a crucial brown led to the loss of the fifth frame.

Sixth seed Stevens became the second player to narrowly miss out on a 147 during this year's tournament.

In the first frame he had to make do with a 105 break after suffering a kick as he attempted to pot his 15th consecutive black.

Reigning champion Ronnie O'Sullivan was also in fine form at the start of his second-round match against Rob Milkins, knocking in two centuries as he opened up a three-frame lead.

Another break of 51 put him 4-0 up as the pair reached the mid-session interval.

Milkins hit back with breaks of 70 and 66 when play resumed to close the gap, but O'Sullivan took the last two frames, including a 94 break, to finish the session 6-2 up.
