Jamie Spencer kept the 3-1 favourite in contention before moving ahead in the closing stages of the five-furlong race.
It was a cunning ride from Spencer, who had switched his horse to the far rail after being handed an unfavourable draw. As the early leaders Lady Dominatrix and Bishops Court began to fade, Malhub and Indian Prince took over. Spencer then moved to the front and led inside the final furlong to record a famous victory for trainer Henry Candy. Malhub was second at 15-2 with 33-1 Indian Prince third. "That was not exactly the plan to go on to the far side" admitted Candy afterwards. "I did say go left a little but I thought he would go up the middle. Obviously the horse was happy going that way so Jamie let him go all the way. "He's not only an exceedingly good horse but he is the most delightful character and he is very, very fast," he added. Odds-on favourite Russian Rhythm overcame a late scare to take the Lowther Stakes. Breathing space With just over two furlongs to go, the two-year-old, ridden by Kieren Fallon, was knocked while trying to go through on the inside by the early pacesetter Wunders Dream. Frankie Dettori and Romantic Liason took up the running as Fallon gave his horse some breathing space before challenging again. Fallon kept his cool brilliantly, guiding his mount from last into the lead before triumphing by just over a length at a price of 8-13. It was a fourth Lowther victory for Russian Rhythm's trainer Sir Michael Stoute. Success Danaskaya finished second at 11-1 with Romantic Liason third. Russian Rhythm had already been the ante-post favourite for next year's 1,000 Guineas and the manner of her win forced bookmakers to cut her odds yet further. She is now as short as 5-2 for the 2003 Newmarket Classic. |
