Golan scales Ascot heights
Golan just edges out Nayef at Ascot
Golan just edges out Nayef at Ascot
Golan pulled off a stunning fightback to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot.

It was emotional win as the horse, an 11-2 shot, was owned by Lord Weinstock, who died earlier this week.

It is also a sad moment because Lord Weinstock would have loved this occasion
Sir Michael Stoute
Golan, the 2,000 Guineas winner, ridden by Kieren Fallon, had not raced for 244 days and came from last to win the 1m 4f race by a head.

He beat Nayef in a close call with Zindabad three-and-a-half lengths further back in third.

Grandera, sent off the 13-8 favourite, was very disappointing.

Afterwards Golan's trainer Sir Michael Stoute said: "It was a great team effort.

"We did our best but he [Golan] helps you along the way.

"It is also a sad moment because Lord Weinstock would have loved this occasion."

It was Fallon's first King George win and he praised the horse.

He said: "I knew he was mentally and physically ready but I was worried about the ground. The 5mm of water sprayed over the course last night certainly helped."

The field was reduced to nine after pre-race favourite Sakhee, High Pitched and Millenary were all withdrawn on Saturday because of the firm groud.

Result:

1. Golan 11-2
2. Nayef 7-1
3. Zindabad 11-2

Head, three-and-half lengths.
