| Coshocton wins final Derby trial Coshocton (left) pulled away towards the finish Coshocton spoiled Dubai Destination's comeback by claiming victory in the Letheby & Christopher Predominate Stakes at Goodward. Dubai Destination, who was running his first race for 249 days after recovering from a hind leg injury, went off as 2-1 favourite in the last of the recognised Derby trials.
But the Godolphin colt ran out of steam coming towards the finish as Philip Robinson pulled away on 9-1 chance Coshocton to take the win. Kieren Fallon come in third on 40-1 shot Frankies Dream, but there was embarrassment for Richard Quinn. Quinn mistakenly guided Sparkling Water towards the top bend instead of the lower bend and had too much ground to make up. Dubai Destination was one of last year's star two-year-olds, beating Rock of Gibraltar in the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. But Godolphin racing manager Simon Crisford confirmed that no decision had yet been taken on whether Dubai Destination would run in the Vodafone Derby at Epsom on 8 June.
"He is a very, very good horse and we are disappointed he didn't win," said Crisford. "We thought we would get away with it, we thought his class would see him through, but he has had a very easy preparation and he will come on a lot for that. "I couldn't tell you if he will run in the Derby, we will have to let the dust settle and talk with Sheikh Mohammed, but he will be left in at tomorrow's forfeit stage. "But I think that if you are going to win the Derby you have got to win the Predominate." Coshocton is a best-priced 25-1 shot with Ladbrokes for the big race, with Dubai Destination available at the same price with Coral. Coshocton's trainer Michael Jarvis, who has never won the Derby, said: "You have got to go there thinking you can win. You just need to keep your fingers crossed and you never know. "He would be a realistic horse in the Derby. How well he runs you will have to wait and see." Sponsorship deal extended In other Derby news on Tuesday, it was announced that Epsom Downs Racecourse and Vodafone Group have extended their sponsorship agreement for the Derby meeting up to and including the 2005 event. The Newbury-based telecoms giant has sponsored the meeting since 1995. Sir Christopher Gent, Vodafone Group's chief executive, said: "As the number one horse race in the world we are pleased to continue our long standing association with the Vodafone Derby." |
