Madrid will host the 2005 World Road Race Championships, cycling's governing body the UCI has announced.

The decision was made during a UCI management committee meeting on the eve of this year's world championships in Zolder, Belgium.

Home favourite Johan Museeuw is bidding to win his second world road race title next Sunday.

The UCI also assigned the:

2005 Track World Championships to Los Angeles

2005 Mountain Bike World Championships to Livigno, Italy

2005 World BMX Championships to Paris

The cycling world championships for the next three years are as follows:

Road racing: 2003 Hamilton, Canada; 2004 Verona; 2005 Madrid

Track: 2003 Shenzen, China, 2004 Melbourne; 2005 Los Angeles

Mountain bike: 2003 Lugano, Switzerland; 2004 Gets, France; 2005 Livigno
