The Italian was thrown off the Giro d'Italia after traces of cocaine appeared in two separate drug tests. He has continued to profess his innocence, blaming medication given to him during a dentist's appointment.
As a result of being thrown off the Giro and being banned from the Tour de France, his team had their invitation to compete in Le Tour rescinded. Simoni has plenty to prove and both he and his team should be fresh. The 31-year-old has previous experience of the Spanish mountains and took two stage wins back in 2000. After his double Tour misery, he looks a strong bet for the overall lead. He said recently: "I am hopeful (for La Vuelta), because I feel the condition is coming, even if I have not yet been able to really measure myself." |
