Steve Brown will be out for revenge at the World Championships after setting up a second-round clash against Phil Taylor.

Brown was made to work for a 4-2 win over wild card David Platt but now has a chance to avenge his 1994 semi-final defeat to Taylor in the event.

"The first year I came here I got to the semi-finals, but I couldn't hit a double and he beat me five straight," said Brown.

"I missed doubles in each of the first three sets and should have been three sets up.

"A lot of players, even experienced players, get up there and get scared by Phil and try and match him.

"I know he's good, but I won't try and match him because I know I can't. I'll just get up there, play my game and not worry about what he's doing."

Brown had been expected to ease past the first hurdle against Platt, who had only qualified through a competition organised in The People newspaper.

But the qualifier took a two-set advantage before Brown's nerves settled as he comfortably took the next two sets.

The fifth set was far tighter, though, but Brown pounced for the lead when Platt missed three set-winning double chances.

He finally booked a Taylor showdown with a stunning 132 outshot.

Brown said afterwards: "The one thing that was in my favour was that I'm a little bit more used to the length of the format than he is.

"I'm just an old git with bags of experience!"

Bulldog bites

There was better fortune for wild card Simon Whitlock, who now faces last year's runner-up Peter Manley following a confident win over Paul Williams.

Whitlock had been 2-1 down in sets before reeling off three consecutive sets for victory.

Shayne 'The Bulldog' Burgess also impressed as he overcame Dutch qualifier Arjan Moen 4-2 for a place in the final 32.

The highlight of the Sussex thrower's victory was a stunning 161 finish in the final set which underlined his resurgence.

In the night's final match, Wayne Mardle underlined his growing reputation with a mesmerising display against American Ray Carver.

He lost just three legs on course to a commanding win.
