| Steelers silence Panthers ![]() The Steelers outwitted Panthers keeper Mika Pietila
The problems for Superleague champions Belfast Giants are mounting after their second defeat of the weekend. They went down 2-0 to Manchester Storm at the MEN Arena on Sunday after losing to London Knights on Friday. After a goalless opening period, Dan Hodge put Manchester ahead and Pierre Allard doubled their advantage on the powerplay. Both coaches, Daryl Lipsey of Manchester and Belfast's Dave Whistle, were ejected in separate incidents for abusing the official. In Sunday's other game, Scottish Eagles won their first game of the season, beating London Knights 6-4. On Saturday, three goals for Sheffield Steelers in the final 10 minutes ended Nottingham Panthers' longest winning run for more than three years. Steelers shut out their fiercest rivals 3-0 in front of a sell-out crowd at the National Ice Centre. Both sides took their share of penalties in the first two periods but the special teams failed to break through. Panthers defenceman Briane Thompson came closest. His effort hit the pipes in the 25th minute. The deadlock was finally broken by Warren Norris at 50:19. A minute later Calle Carlsson fired past Mika Pietila. Panthers coach Paul Adey pulled Pietila in the closing seconds but Norris claimed an empty-net goal six seconds before the buzzer. Joel Laing's shut out was his fourth of the season.
On Friday, the Giants saw their record-breaking streak come to an end. Giants - unbeaten in 19 home games - went down 4-2 against London Knights. Former Belfast captain turned Knight Jeff Hoad showed no mercy against his former club. He claimed an assist on Dennis Maxwell's fourth minute goal. Shane Johnson levelled before the break but Kim Ahlroos put the visitors back in front on the powerplay just over minute after the re-start. Mo Mansi traded second period goals with Paxton Schulte but Hoad took advantage of good work by Nate Leslie for London's fourth at 43:57. Paxton Schulte was given his marching orders with just one second left on the clock after an altercation with Dennis Maxwell.
