| Coulthard questions fuel changes ![]() Coulthard says rule changes are redefining the sport David Coulthard is doubtful whether proposed changes to the way Formula One teams use their fuel loads will make the sport a more exciting spectacle. The McLaren driver was responding to F1 chief Max Mosley's suggestion that teams will not be able to refuel cars between the end of qualifying and the start of a Grand Prix. "It throws up a situation which is unique to the sport," Coulthard told BBC Radio Five Live. "We have always qualified with more fuel than we needed.
"Now you have to make a decision about where you want to be and where it is beneficial to start the race. "If you qualify with a full tank you will be near the back of the grid but you could come through when others are making pit stops. "It changes the whole strategy and will make it difficult for the public to follow until the end of the race." Coulthard believes that the refuelling rule change may not have the desired effect of increasing interest in the sport. "Any changes that increase spectator enjoyment are a good thing in the long run.
"The rules seem to be changing on a weekly basis. It is redefining Formula One. "The history books can't really be updated anymore. "It is no longer about pole positions and things like that when you are bringing strategy into how much fuel you are using in qualifying sessions. "If it creates more overtaking and increases spectacle the sport will be more fun for drivers and ultimately fans." Coulthard argues that although rule changes have been made in a bid to make the sport more exciting, ultimately it is up to the rest of the grid to challenge Ferrari's dominance. "People were complaining when Ferrari held a monopoly last year but it is up to other teams to work harder." |
