Sato makes BAR switch
Japanese driver Takuma Sato
Sato had a mixed season with Jordan
Japanese driver Takuma Sato is to join BAR as their test driver for next season.

The 25-year-old tested for BAR in 2001 but was unable to make the breakthough there.

He spent last season with Jordan where he had a difficult time but finished on a high with fifth place in the Japanese Grand Prix.

But Eddie Jordan's team are struggling financially following the pull-out of major sponsor Deutsche Post.

2003 will give me the opportunity to assist with the development of the BAR car

New BAR test driver Takuma Sato

Jordan recently admitted his number two driver would have to provide personal sponsorship, which Sato has been unable to do.

Under the terms of the new BAR agreement, Sato, who joins Briton Anthony Davidson on the test team, will also have the option of becoming one of the team's main drivers in 2004 and 2005.

Jacques Villeneuve has already said that he will quit the sport if he cannot get a competitive drive when his BAR contract expires at the end of next season.

Despite losing his Formula One drive, Sato is remaining positive about his chances with his new team.

"I don't see testing for BAR as a step backwards. I want to be with a team where my driving ability is the most important consideration rather than other factors," he admitted.

"2003 will give me the opportunity to assist with the development of the car which is very important.

"BAR is a different team to the one I knew before and from what I see, the changes are definitely for the better.

"I'm very excited about working with them and I feel positive that this is the best move for me," he said.
