Tiger Woods produced one of the best shots of his life to make a birdie on the 18th hole as the second round of the USPGA Championship finally drew to a close.

The world number one finished the opening 36 holes on four under par, two behind the leaders after Fred Funk dropped a shot.

The wet and blustery conditions made life difficult for the 41 players who had to complete the second round.

But Woods played his way out of trouble on the last hole as he hit an unbelievable three iron from a fairway bunker to within 12 feet, and sank the putt.

"That's probably one of the all-time greatest shots I have ever hit," said Woods.

"I just tried to make sure I stayed out of the grandstands."

Playing partner and Open champion Ernie Els described Woods' shot as "unbelievable".

Funk resumed on the 15th hole and immediataely dropped a stroke.

A birdie and bogey followed to see the veteran finish in a group of five tied for the lead at six under.

England's Justin Rose was the other leading player to figure, picking up one stroke on four holes to move into contention on two under par.

Bad weather had brought play to an abrupt end on Friday, with Funk lying on seven under par after some inspired golf.

Mark Calcavecchia, Justin Leonard, Rich Beem and South Africa's Retief Goosen shared the clubhouse lead on six under

Calavecchia enjoyed a rollercoaster round featuring an eagle, six birdies and four bogeys to come in with a 68 and a six-under-par total.

But he was swiftly joined in the clubhouse by another former Open champion in Leonard, who dropped just one shot in a sparkling round of 66 featuring seven birdies.

That was the best round of the tournament so far, but Beem matched it with birdies at the last two holes.

Goosen, last year's US Open champion, then came in with his second successive 69 to make it a four-way tie.

Swede Pierre Fulke, due to play in September's Ryder Cup, led the European challenge after a bogey-free 68 left him at four under for the tournament.
