| Tiger's third round ![]() It started badly - Woods' second shot on the first Tiger Woods suffered the worst round of his professional career with an 81 on the third day of The Open championship. Seven bogeys and two double bogeys destroyed his card, with a lone birdie coming at the 17th. Even on a day of high scoring, the world's best player seems to be out of contention, his dreams of a Grand Slam all but over. Final score: +6 (+10 for the round) Hole 18: Another iron finds the middle of the fairway and he will have a shot of just over 180 yards to the pin. His second is as perfect a shot as he could have hit, finishing just five feet from the pin. He walks to the final hole with a smile on his face, even though, regardless of his finish, he will have completed his worst round as a professional. The putt lips out, symbolising the wretched day that it has been - Woods finishes with an 81. Hole 17: With the driver off the tee, Woods shows why he remains the best golfer in the world, with a fearsome drive which gives him a chance of reaching the green in two. His second, with the three wood, lands short of the green and he could still make birdie. The chip leaves a four foot putt which he makes for his first birdie of the day and he raises his arms to the crowd in a moment which shows that the world's best player definitely has a sense of humour. Hole 16: Although the tee shot drifts to the right, it remains on the fringe of the green, although leaving a very long birdie putt. The putt ends hole high, but he will still have to face a tricky three footer for par. He makes the putt and makes consecutive pars for the first time since the third hole. Hole 15: He finds the fairway again but surely requires miracles at every hole to avoid making his worst every round at a major. One would expect a scowl to have emerged on Woods' face, but he is still capable of a smile while sharing some banter with his playing partner and friend Mark O'Meara. Despite looking disappointed after hitting his second, it finishes 20 feet away from the hole. The birdie putt slips past the hole but a par ends a terrible run of three bogeys or worse at consecutive holes. Hole 14: His drive finds the centre of the fairway, suggesting that some consistency is finally entering his game. He then makes it to the edge of the green but fails with a difficult putt for a birdie, before again missing with a straightforward putt for par. Eventually he holes for another bogey. Hole 13: On this par three, his tee shot goes into the first greenside bunker on the full. His lie at the back of the bunker is a shocking one and his second leaves him in the sand. Woods knocks his third - from a dreadful lie in front of the bunker's face - is a sublime shot which hits the pin but rolls past by eight feet. Facing another double bogey, Woods again misreads the putt and is now facing making more than 80 for his round. Hole 12: Woods' iron from the tee finds the middle of the fairway. Once again, with the wind at his back, the reigning Masters and US Open champion overclubs his approach and finds himself off the green after his second. His third is a shot which would make amateur golfers around the world feel better - a duffed chip which fails to get past the rough and travels maybe four feet. He chips to the left side of the hole and makes yet another bogey. Hole 11: A stunning drive puts Woods into prime position in the middle of the fairway on this short par four. Another punch shot puts himself into the heart of the green with an outside chance of birdie. The putt, from 35 feet, goes agonisingly past the side of the hole but it is a vital par. Hole 10: Woods takes the driver but is wild again, his tee shot drifting off to the right and into Muirfield's treacherous rough. He strikes a provisional which is a significantly better effort. Nevertheless, he finds his original tee shot and is once again forced to play a safety shot back to the fairway. His third is possibly his best of the day - a punch shot which he draws in and lands to within eight feet of the hole. He pulls his putt ever so slightly and starts his back nine with a bogey. Hole nine: After a drive that drifts into the first cut of rough, Woods fails to find the green with his second on this par five. His third drifts to within five feet of the pin - his first realistic birdie opportunity of the day. But the putt drifts to the right - a miserable end to a dreadful outward nine holes, for which he has taken 42 strokes. Hole eight: With the metal three wood, Woods - now capless - comes off his tee shot and pushes it into more trouble on the right side of the hole. Amazingly, he misses the six bunkers on that side and finds a lie in the rough which allows him a shot to the green on this long par four. His second lands 10 yards short of the green. Using the 'Texas wedge' - a putter from off the fairway - Woods again misreads the speed of the slope on a green and finishes 10 feet past the pin. He pulls his putt and suffers his sixth dropped shot of the day. Hole seven: On this relatively short par three, Woods finds the left edge of the green and will have a very long putt for a birdie. The putt stays on the left side of the hole and Woods is left with a three-footer for his par which he makes to end a terrible run. Hole six: With a three wood from the tee, Woods fails to create the fade which is ideal on this tricky par four and finds himself on a bank just off the fairway. Once again, his only option is to chop the ball out of the rough and onto the fairway. Yet another punch shot flies over the pin but this one stays on the edge of the green, although his putt from 25 feet will be for a par. The world's best golfer misreads yet another putt and he is now over par for the tournament. Hole five: Woods hits his best tee shot of the day, a drive into the heart of the fairway on this par five which is playing very long into a head wind.
From being in a comfortable position after his tee shot, Woods plays his fourth from the fairway and the ball flies 30 yards over the flag and to the back of the green. After playing a 'flop' shot, Woods still faces a 10 footer for his bogey. Once again, Woods fails to read the line and suffers a very rare seven. Hole four: A dreadful tee shot lands in the walkway between two banks of thick rough and Woods will still have a reasonable chance of making par. Woods changes his glove which is already soaked and spins his ball to within eight feet of the flag, although the putt is likely to be a tricky one. The par putt fails to take the break and stays on the high side and Woods makes his second bogey of the round. Hole three: Using a three wood, he finds the first cut of rough and should be able to reach the green with his second. While the rain is abating, the wind is stronger than it has been since the tournament started and its presence is inhibiting Woods' swing. A low punch shot finds the green but the balls lies maybe 50 feet from the pin. His birdie attempt falls just inches short but Woods smiles, perhaps already aware that on this afternoon, par will be a good score in these conditions. Hole two: On this short par four, Woods elects to go with a low iron and finds the thick rough again, this time on the left side of the hole. The weather is making golf very difficult and Woods can only hack the ball out. His third is from maybe 40 yards and he plays his best shot so far - a sand wedge which pitches six yards from the flag and roles to within two feet. He makes his putt for par. Hole one: Woods sticks with an iron for the first hole, as he had done for the first two rounds. In wet and windy conditions, he pushes his tee shot into the thick rough on the right side of the hole. He chops his second out of the rough to 40 yards short of the green but on the grass surrounding a nasty pot bunker. His third is a chip which goes 10 feet past the pin. The par putt stays on the high side and he has to settle for a bogey on the first. |
