| Woosnam hails gutsy Price ![]() Ian Woosnam and Paul McGinley celebrate victory Europe vice-captain Ian Woosnam hailed the gutsy performance of his players after they clinched the Ryder Cup on Sunday. It was all square at eight apiece after Saturday afternoon's fourballs, but Europe produced a stunning performance in the final day's singles to take the match 15-12. Woosnam picked out compatriot Phillip Price for special praise after the Pontypridd player beat world number two Phil Mickelson 3&2.
"I went along with Pricey for quite a bit and, being a fellow Welshman, tried to boost his confidence," Woosnam said. It seemed to help as Price, who has been badly out of sorts this year, ripped up the form book to beat a man 117 places above him in the world rankings, holing a 25-foot putt on the 16th to clinch his match. Europe captain Sam Torrance bravely put his best players out first in the singles and four and a half of the first six points available went Europe's way. But the plan required the final six players to cause some upsets against the American big hitters, with Price and Ireland's Paul McGinley leading the way. "We put a very strong start out but the American players were there to be shot down," Woosnam added. "There's always going to be a hero and Phil Price was one of them and Paul McGinley was the other today. "That takes no credit away from any of the other players because all the guys played fantastic as well. "When you're out on the golf course you're just trying to concentrate on your own match but, when you're on the management side, you get more nervous watching." |
