| Price claims shock triumph ![]() Price produced one of the great Cup performances Phillip Price v Phil Mickelson (Europe won 3&2) Welsh underdog Phillip Price claimed a sensational victory over world number two Phil Mickelson. Europe's unlikely hero sunk a 25-foot putt on the 16th green to seal the win and spark jubilant celebrations. Price stood little chance on paper against the man 117 places above him in golf's global rankings.
Skipper Curtis Strange held back Mickelson for the penultimate match. But it was the gamble by Europe captain Sam Torrance to send a rookie out in the 11th tie which paid dividends. Price was hardly overawed by his illustrious opponent, taking a fifth-hole lead and then producing one of the tournament's great recoveries to go two ahead at the sixth. He holed out after planting an awesome approach shot on the green from the edge of a water hazard, and then watched Mickelson miss a sitter. A par at the seventh pushed Price three ahead. And although Mickelson won the ninth, his opponent instantly restored the three-hole cushion. The American came back at the 15th, but he was second best on the day. Mickelson said: "Phillip seemed to have an answer for everything and he played great. "Every time I knocked it close, he followed it up, sometimes from out of the rough." |
