| McGinley seals late rally ![]() Clarke helped turn round Europe's fortunes Clarke/McGinley v Hoch/Furyk (Match halved) Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley gave Europe a late lift by rescuing a half against Scott Hoch and Jim Furyk in Saturday's final fourballs contest. The home duo were two behind with five holes to play, but showed steely determination to edge back into the contest. They went behind again at the 17th, but McGinley's par four at the final hole levelled matters and left the overall contest tied 8-8 going into Sunday's final day.
Northern Ireland's Clarke said it was a suitable outcome to his topsy-turvy tie. "A half was a very fair result," he said. Hoch, at 46 the oldest player at The Belfry, put his pairing in front at the eighth hole and they went two up at the 13th. But Clarke immediately offered Europe hope with a majestic chip in from off the green which reduced the deficit to one. McGinley pitched to four feet on the 16th and holed to level matters. And the Dubliner repeated the trick on the last after Furyk had restored the Americans' advantage with a birdie at 17. Hoch said he was disappointed to have dropped a shot on the last after a near-flawless round. "We played some pretty good golf, but it's upsetting that we bogeyed the last," he said. |
