| Monty's Ryder Cup mission ![]() Montgomerie and Torrance want the Ryder Cup back The American public may have cruelly dubbed Colin Montgomerie "Mrs Doubtfire" for his rotund physique. But deep down, the jibe demonstrates their utmost respect for a man they recognise as Europe's most consistent performer in the Ryder Cup. Despite his failing in the Majors, Monty has always produced his best for the bi-annual challenge. In his five previous campaigns, he has never lost a singles match against his Atlantic counterparts.
Although his record is not as impressive in foursomes, the Scot has still won more matches than he has lost. European captain Sam Torrance will hope Montgomerie can shrug off the back problem which caused him so much trouble before the Ryder Cup. The Scot pulled out of the BMW International Open in Munich in late August because of his condition and has taken it easy since. Torrance realises he may have to treat Montgomerie with kid gloves. "It might be a bit much for him to play in every series but I had already taken that into consideration. I might not push him." Montgomerie is passionate about the Ryder Cup and he will aim to compete in as many matches as possible.
His passion was evident for all to see three years ago at Brookline when he accused the Americans crowds of excessive anti-European behaviour. Boos echoed from the crowd when he stood over a putt on the sixth hole - then he had to contend with a camera flash three holes later. "Geeing up the crowd before we play our shots is unfair," said a disaffected Montgomerie, clearly annoyed at the tactics employed by the Americans. Distractions aside, Montgomerie and fellow Scot Paul Lawrie later beat Tiger Woods and Steve Pate 2&1. Although Monty's efforts were ultimately in vain, his performances signalled his importance to the European side. Despite losing his place as Europe's number one, Monty will still be regarded by Torrance as his "on-course" captain. Any golfer in possession of seven European Order of Merits rightly commands authority and respect from his fellow professionals. |
