Ron Atkinson has announced plans to light up your Christmas by releasing his own festive single.

But "It's Christmas - Let's Give Love a Try" is by no means the first record to come from the world of football.

BBC Sport Online charts the tribulations of a trio of artistes who switched from stadium to studio.

Hoddle and Waddle's ode to football floodlights reached number 12 in the Hit Parade back in 1987.

And their foray into the musical league was a two-legged affair as they followed that success by releasing "It's Goodbye".

Thankfully, the pair's prophetic skills outshone their vocal talents - though Hoddle later got into trouble by mixing with clairvoyants.

And it really was bon voyage for Hoddle as he toddled off to France, hanging his mullet in shame as he left Spurs to hide out in Monaco.

The Leeds boss is under so much pressure that he may consider another crack at the music biz.

But he should be reminded that his 1974 release got as close to a chart position as Leeds have come to winning a Premiership game at Elland Road in recent months.

And Terry, you might find that when Leeds fans make eyes at you, it's because they would like you to leave the club, never to come back.

Should Venables find his stay in Yorkshire cut short, even a cover of the Sinatra classic "My Way" would fail to boost his flagging pride.

Football's hard man gave notice that he had a grasp of how to play an instrument or two when he famously shook Paul Gascoigne's maracas.

With Jones' rich Welsh heritage, it was only a matter of time before Jones' take on the sounds of the valley would be caressing the ears of the public.

But time will tell if his current release will last long in the memory or be gone in 60 seconds.

Typically, Jones has gone for the throat and recorded not just a single but an entire album.

Tied with his movie career, Jones' stab at the pop charts puts him in with a chance of becoming the male equivalent of Jennifer Lopez.

Way to go, V-Jo!
