Lewis kept in check

Lennox Lewis is facing the toughest test of his career - after being challenged by heavyweight rival Wladimir Klitschko...to a game of chess.

The six foot seven inch Russian believes he can hurt Lewis on the board, before finishing him off in the ring.

And he has even lined up Grand Master Garry Kasparov to act as his cornerman.

Klitschko, who destroyed veteran Ray Mercer last weekend (at boxing, that is), thinks the public will love it.

Garry Kasparov
Kasparov ponders the Lewis strategy

"Never before have two champions played chess before the fight," he reasoned. "I think it's a good idea."

If Lewis were to take up the offer, he might need to learn a few tricks.

And as luck would have it, BBC Sport Online managed to infiltrate a recent Klitschko-Kasparov training session and pinch a few secret moves.

The Pawn:
Generally used during the early rounds, it begins with one long jab followed by several short ones. Tends to run out of steam.

The Bishop:
Good for leading the attack, handy reach, but lacks direction and can be easily telegraphed.

The Rook:
More versatile than the bishop, this can catch the opponent off guard, driving forward or back and hooking from either side.

Queen chess piece
The queen wears the trousers

Tends to be ineffective early on, but once unleashed can cause real problems.

The Knight:
Classic combination - the graceful shimmy, followed by the brutal uppercut. Can come from either way - opponent won't know what's hit them.

The Queen:
The mother of all weapons - lethal in the wrong hands. Moves like Ali, stings like Foreman - guaranteed to keep any fighter in check.

So now you know, Lennox. Master all these skills and you truly will be king of the ring. If not, demand a rematch - only this time make it with snakes and ladders.
