England's record at Brisbane features just four wins in 16 Tests, while Australia have managed to do rather better, by winning eight Ashes Tests there.

In recent years, Australia have been unbeatable at the Gabba, indeed the last time they lost there was in 1988, when the West Indies were at the peak of their powers.

The last time England won at the Gabba, they also won the series. Here, we look at that match and the previous three wins by England in Brisbane.

14-19 November, 1986. England beat Australia by seven wickets

John Emburey was a key member of Mike Gatting's touring side who successfully retained the Ashes in 1986-7.

Botham's innings on day two was superb

Here he tells BBC Sport Online how the win at the Gabba set the wheels in motion for a memorable winter Down Under.

"Following the failures of the matches before, the whole attitude of the team was defiant going into the Test match.

"Our win at the Gabba really hinged around Ian Botham's 138 on the second day and that's what kick-started our tour.

"His partnership with Phil DeFreitas, who was playing his first Test at the age of 20 and hit 40 at number nine - got us beyond 450.

"It got us into a great position, one from which we believed we could win. And after Graham Dilley took five wickets in the first innings, I got five in the second innings when they followed on.

"It was just a process of wheeling away but in that second innings, DeFreitas bowled Geoff Marsh off an inside edge just at the right time.

"Marsh was on a century at the time and they looked like they might turn it around.

"Then all of a sudden we got several more wickets and that was it."

Emburey remembers the feeling in the dressing-room afterwards - a feeling of vindication, above all else.

"It wasn't very pleasant what people had been writing about us at home. But it had got us together as a team and gave us belief.

"Chris Broad then scored hundreds in the next three Tests and the Ashes were ours again."

1-6 December, 1978. England beat Australia by seven wickets

Australia's best players were with Kerry Packer's World Series and Botham, Bob Willis and Chris Old ran through the side on the first day, bowling them out for 116.

The home team made a better fist of it in the second innings, but England ran out easy victors.

4-9 December, 1936. England beat Australia by 322 runs

In Don Bradman's first match as Australian captain, Australia were set 381 to win in the second innings and were all out for just 58.

Bill Voce and Gubby Allen did all the damage, the innings lasting just 12.3 overs.

10-16 February, 1933. England beat Australia by six wickets

It was the fourth Test of the Bodyline series, and Harold Larwood had perfected the art.

He took seven wickets in the match and England took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series.
