Upashantha spills an easy catch off Trescothick

Vaughan punished anything loose and Trescothick was content to play second fiddle during a partnership of 66.

Dilhara Fernando caused both batsmen some problems with his extra pace and deceived Vaughan, on 36, into chipping a slower ball to Chaminda Vaas at mid-off.

Trescothick continued to punish anything loose and reached his 50 by lunch before being let off twice by Sri Lanka's fielders off the bowling of the unlucky Fernando.

Hashan Tillekeratne dropped a stinging chance at gully with Trescothick on 62 and Upashantha failed to cling onto a dolly chance at midwicket as the opener top-edged an attempted pull off the next delivery.

Trescothick put on 126 with Mark Butcher and looked well set to reach three figures before edging a Muttiah Muralitharan off-break to first slip where Mahela Jayawadene took a sharp, low catch.

Stewart dropped

Muralitharan had endured a torrid start, conceding 22 runs from his first three overs, but later settled into a steady rhythm without looking too threatening before finding Trescothick's edge.

Butcher looked assured as he reached his third successive Test 50 and Hussain started positively before skying a Fernando slower ball to Muralitharan at mid-off for 16.

Graham Thorpe was lucky to survive a loud appeal for caught behind after scoring just five runs but was the last batsman to fall in the gloom after play had resumed following a break for bad light.

The batsmen were clearly unhappy at having to resume and Upashantha took advantage to atone for his previous errors to have Thorpe caught by wicketkeeper Kumar Sangakkara on 32.

Jayawardene dropped a difficult one-handed diving catch at gully as Alec Stewart got off the mark, and both batsmen were relieved when rain prematurely ended play.
