| Thursday, 5 December, 2002, 12:43 GMT Surrey secure Clarke ![]() Clarke made a huge impression in his debut season All-rounder Rikki Clarke has joined Surrey's highest-ranked players after signing a new five-year contract. Among the county champions' playing staff only former England captain Alec Stewart and county skipper Adam Hollioake have deals of a similar length, both signed in 1998. Clarke, 21, made a massive impact in his debut first-class season, scoring a century in his first Championship match on the way to 711 first-class runs at an average of 50.78. He also took 21 wickets in all forms of cricket, and gained a call-up to an injury-hit England one-day squad, although he did not play in September's ICC Champions Trophy. "I couldn't imagine playing anywhere else or ever playing against Surrey," said the Guildford-born youngster. "This deal gives me a platform on which to build after my initial season. "My aims are to be a Surrey regular and win trophies as well as representing my country as soon as possible." Surrey manager Keith Medlycott said that a long-term deal was needed to secure Clarke's services after great interest from other counties. "This signing is a clear indication of our intent to build on the success of the last seven years as well as to continue to develop our quality young players," he added. "Rikki was an outstanding last season and we had no hesitation in offering him a five-year contract." |
