Pollock regrets verbal clash
Jayawardene receives treatment from the team physio
Jayawardene (centre) did not see the funny side
Shaun Pollock acknowledged that his joke had backfired after an altercation with Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene on day four of the second Test.

The incident occured after the batsman top edged an attempted hook shot off Pollock's bowling.

"I walked over to pat him on the helmet and tell him ' You jammy little so-and-so'.

"I don't think he appreciated me touching him, which is understandable, but I've had a chat with him and it's fine," Pollock said at the close of play.

"It was done in good spirit on my part."

Bad light resulted in 28 overs of play being lost, but Pollock remained hopeful of forcing a win on the final day.

"Jayawardene and Tillekeratne have been playing well, but if we can break that partnership there's a long tail.

Ntini bowls to Marvan Atapattu
Ntini atoned for his batting aberration
"So hopefully we could bowl them out and chase whatever we had to," he commented.

Pollock had earlier become only the fourth man in Test history to make 99 not out after last man Makhaya Ntini gave away his wicket with a rash shot.

"Obviously it's disappointing - you like to get Test hundreds.

"When he hit that shot I just turned around hoping the guy would drop it, but he managed to get underneath it.

"I suppose you've got to forgive him (Ntini) because he's come in, bowled really well and taken two wickets."
