His figures of five for 59 also enabled him to equal Sir Richard Hadlee's record of taking five wickets in a Test innings on 36 occasions. Spin bowler Muralitharan lifted his career total to 430 wickets with a match return of 10 for 98 as the shortcomings of Bangladesh's batting line-up were exposed once again. Opener Mohammad Al Sahariar survived for three and a half hours to make 67, one short of his Test best score, and there were useful contributions from Habibul Bashar (34), Khaled Mashud (26) and Enamul Haque (22). But Bangladesh had no answer to Muralitharan, whose second innings figures of five for 59 helped him secure the Man of the Match award, despite Aravinda de Silva's double century on the second day. It was Bangladesh's 11th defeat in 12 matches since being granted Test status, and the fifth time they have been beaten in three days. Beginning their second innings 380 runs behind, half of their side were dismissed during the morning session. Hannan Sarkar was lbw to Sujeeva de Silva for one in the second over and Dilhara Fernando then had Ehsanul Haque caught for five before Al Sahariar and Bashar temporarily halted the slide. Their shot selection was generally sound as they added 77 in 19 overs, but the introduction of Muralitharan worked once again for Sri Lanka as he bowled Bashar and then added the wickets of Akram Khan and Aminul Islam. They were both caught at silly point by Kumar Sangakkara - with Islam completing a pair when he fell first ball. Al Sahariar reached his third Test half century from 90 balls and by lunch had collected 12 fours. He failed to add to his score following the re-start, however, as he fell to the Muralitharan-Sangakkara partnership, with Manjurul Islam later giving Sangakkara his fourth catch of the innings. Haque hit three fours before he was bowled by Fernando, but the final wicket went to Aravinda de Silva, whose occasional off-spin accounted for Mashud after the Bangladesh skipper had resisted for over two hours. Sri Lanka: Sanath Jayasuriya, Marvan Atapattu, Mahela Jayawardene, Russel Arnold, Aravinda de Silva, Kumar Sangakkara, Prasanna Jayawardena, Muttiah Muralitharan, Dilhara Fernando, Sujeeva de Silva, Charitha Buddika Fernando. Bangladesh: Khaled Mashud, Habibul Bashar, Aminul Islam, Akram Khan, Al Sahariar, Ehsanul Haque, Hannan Sarkar, Enamul Haque, Manjural Islam, Talha Jubair, Alamgir Kabir.
