Fleming leads NZ fightback
Stephen Fleming lost the toss, but is batting well
Fleming's knock held New Zealand's innings together
First Test, Barbados, day one (close): New Zealand 257-6 v West Indies

Captain Stephen Fleming led New Zealand's resistance with a magnificent century before falling to Carl Hooper shortly before stumps.

Fleming made a vital 130 after New Zealand fought back from 117 for five.

The West Indies earlier seized control on the first day of the first Test at the Kensington Oval.

Fleming steadied the ship by reaching 68 at tea, after the Kiwis lost four wickets in the afternoon session to surrender the initiative.

The Black Caps had earlier recovered strongly for the loss of opener Lou Vincent to reach 77 for one at lunch, with Fleming on 19 and Mark Richardson nine short of a half-century.

But Richardson was bowled by a lethal inswinger from Adam Sanford on the resumption without adding to his 41, with the score on 88.

And New Zealand then suffered a mini collapse as Chris Harris (0), Nathan Astle (2) and Craig McMillan (6) were all dismissed in quick succession.

Brian Lara picked up two catches at first slip off Harris and Astle before McMillan was trapped lbw by Sanford as the tourists strugggled to 117-5.

Fleming and Robbie Hart steered them through to the tea interval without further loss.

Promising start

Earlier, Richardson and Vincent had got off to a promising start after being put in to bat by West Indies captain Carl Hooper.

Pace bowlers Dillon and Pedro Collins struggled to generate pace and bounce from a flat wicket and the New Zealand openers looked comfortable.

But Dillon then removed Vincent for 14, caught behind by Ridley Jacobs as he edged a leg-cutter, to claim the 100th Test wicket of his career.

New Zealand have never won a Test in the West Indies, while the home team have only lost three of the 38 Tests they have played at Bridgetown.
