Ask Andy and Jeremy
Jeremy Guscott and ex-Scotland skipper Andy Nicol answered your e-mails after Sunday 9 February's Rugby Special.

Andy Nicol's answers:

Tim Scott, UK

Scotland made great strides over the autumn Tests, but I get the impression that if they pick up a few injuries, they are in serious trouble.

In certain positions we have great strength in depth: At second row, at stand-off and even in the back-row, despite Pountney's retirement. In other positions we aren't so strong.

If Gordon Bulloch gets injured at hooker we are in trouble. The same with Brian Redpath at scrum-half, although we do have talented young guys who are untested. We won't be able to cope with injuries in the Six Nations nearly as well as England and France.

Gordon Part, Edinburgh

Could the fact that Scotland have a very small pool of players who are all likely to go to the World Cup breed complacency?

Not at all. Complacency is something that doesn't come into the Scottish psyche. It gives you confidence to know you're going and focuses training harder. And we do have a bigger pool than 26 players, so there is competition. There are 20 players guaranteed for the World Cup, but if you look at the strength of the A team, then you see there will be a lot of competition.

Graham Treece, Scotland

Did the autumn internationals show that the northern hemisphere has stolen a march on the south ahead of the World Cup?

No, but it gave the north confidence. Home advantage is everything. What it did do is show the gap is closing. But if you look at New Zealand and the number of players they left at home and still managing to get results against Ireland and Wales and narrowly losing to England, they came out better than anyone.

Gary Keenan, UK

Do you believe, as I do, that the difference in the Six Nations between France and England will be the cutting edge of the French backline?

That's a generalisation that doesn't explain how good England are. England are powerful and direct, but they still have flair players like Greenwood and Robinson. Flair won't be the difference next Saturday. They both have very good backlines.

Jeremy Guscott's answers:

Brian, Waterford, Ireland

Surely on Friday's play for Leicester, Geordan Murphy deserves the No.15 jersey ahead of Girvan Dempsey?

It's an obvious case, but Dempsey is more solid and dependable at international level. Geordan is more of an attacking full-back, so I'd stick him on the bench.

Michael Darch, United Arab Emirates

If you could change any one rule in the game today what would that be?

I'd cut the number of substitutes from seven to three.

Julian Stewart, England

England have strength in depth all over the team except for a real cutting edge at outside centre. Putting aside his Bath allegiance to Mike Tindall, does Jerry think Jason Robinson, Henry Paul or someone else is the answer to this problem?

Robinson, Paul or Simpson-Daniel are not the solution. Greenwood and Tindall are the best centres currently playing in the Zurich Premiership. They will get better before someone else comes along and knocks them off.

Kimberley Bond, Bath, England

If Newcastle finish bottom they cannot be relegated considering the amount of money they have invested into their ground and promoting rugby in general?

Rules are rules, and unfortunate as it is, there's no reason why they can't get back up. But I don't think they'll go down in the first place. Although I'm not saying whether Bath will go down either!
