Czech-born Navratilova was one of the greatest woman players ever. Between 1974 (when she defected to the USA and turned professional) and 1995, she notched up an incredible 56 Grand Slam titles - 18 singles, 31 doubles and 7 mixed doubles. Navratilova broke the mould - her physical fitness and aggressive serve-and-volley game had never been seen before in women's tennis. These attributes stood Martina in good stead on the grass courts of Wimbledon where she reached 12 singles finals and won a record nine times. Overall she won 19 titles at SW19 - only one short of the record set by Billie Jean King - and was world number one for a total of 331 weeks. Although she never won a calendar-year Grand Slam, her 1984 French Open victory meant that she held the four major titles in tennis at the same time. |
