| Friday, 5 July, 2002, 14:23 GMT 15:23 UK Happy on Henman hill Henman Hill has been crowded for the tournament They came, they saw a little tennis, they got wet. There was little for the occupants of Henman Hill to get excited about early on Friday morning as they waited patiently for the first men's semi-final to start.
But when they did get a brief glimpse of the players, they cheered Tim Henman's every shot while Lleyton Hewitt, cast in the role of pantomime villain, was shamelessly booed. It was hard to see the allure of Henman Hill at that stage as constant drizzle came down with the prospect of any play looking unlikely. But some had gone to great lengths to get there - Pete, Jason and Dave had arrived at Wimbledon at five in the morning to ensure their places. "We thought it was going to be really busy," said Pete. "But it wasn't. "There was the same amount of people at nine as there were when we arrived." The early start looked like it may take its toll. There seemed a good chance that the dedicated trio would fall asleep long before they saw any play, certainly if they carried on consuming beer at the same rate. But they were clearly enjoying themselves on Henman Hill - and in no mood to entertain the idea of a name change to Rusedski Ridge.
Ben, Katie, Mark, Nicky, Zoe and Adam from Shropshire were also out-and-out Henman supporters. "He's got no personality but he does try his best, and that's what all British people support," said Katie. "He's a British player who is our best hope of winning this tournament and we're going to get behind him," stated Adam.
"He lets us down occasionally, puts us through hell to watch a match, but he's a British player, we love him to bits and we want him to win the tournament." And mingling happily amid all the Union Jacks and flags of St George were a smattering of brave Aussies. Brook, Michelle, Geraldine and James were one such group hoping for a Hewitt victory. "Aussies like being the underdogs," said Brook. "We'll make our voices heard." And what did they think of Henman Hill? "I think we might have to rename it," said Brook. Hewitt Hill, hmm, somehow I doubt it will catch on? |
