| Friday, 28 June, 2002, 23:36 GMT 00:36 UK Becker: Rusedski can win it Evert believes Rusedski's intensity was crucial Former Wimbledon champion Boris Becker believes Greg Rusedski has a realistic chance of lifting the Wimbledon title. Rusedski produced one of his best ever displays on Friday to crush American Andy Roddick 6-3 6-4 6-2.
And Becker told BBC Two's Today at Wimbledon that if Rusedski maintains that level of performance, he could become the first British player to win a singles title at the SW19 tournament since Virginia Wade in 1977. He said: "I was very impressed with Greg and the comments he made after the game. "He is not getting carried away with a huge win and this was one of the best performances from him I have seen. "You can see that he is not satisfied with being in the fourth round - he wants to win it this year. "And he will realise that if he puts out another performance like that he has got a real chance of winning Wimbledon.
"There is a long way to go, but he definitely has the potential." Three-time Wimbledon champion Chris Evert agreed that Rusedski's performance had been highly impressive. "The thing about Greg's win that really impressed me was his intensity. "I don't know Greg as a person and I don't know his style very well, so my question is - can he keep up that intensity every match? "This is only the third round, but I thought that intensity was what really helped him win that match. "He was totally focused and did not let anything bother him." |
