Ancic showed no nerves at all as he came through 6-3 7-6 6-3 in just under two hours. Federer reached the quarter-finals last year before falling to Tim Henman, and had been widely tipped to go further this year.
But the Swiss star had no answer to the straightforward serve-volleying of Ancic. Ancic, who was a finalist at junior Wimbledon in 2000, hails from Split, which is also the home of current Wimbledon champion Ivanisevic. Ivanisevic' father Srdjan was in the players' box to support Ancic, who is the second youngest player in the main draw. After a tight first set with only one break of serve, the decisive moment of the match came in the second-set tie-break. And Ancic grabbed his opportunity, racing to a 6-1 lead to leave Federer with an impossible task. When the 18-year-old broke in the fourth game of the third set Federer looked doomed. Ancic then held his nerve to serve out and reached match point after one hour and 40 minutes. And a wild forehand from Federer put the seal on the first major upset of the tournament. |
