Third seed Lindsay Davenport swept aside the challenge of Hungarian Melinda Czink to reach round four of the US Open.

Davenport was in a ruthless mood, clinching the opening six games and the first set in just 15 minutes.

Czink, who beat Davenport's good friend 28th seed Lisa Raymond in round two, looked sharper in the second set but failed to convert two crucial break points at 1-0 and 3-1.

Davenport took full advantage, cruising to a 6-0 6-2 victory in 42 minutes to book a match with Nadia Petrova.

"She's a good player. She's dangerous," Davenport said about her next opponent.

"She had a great run at the French Open. The beginning starts in the next round for me.

"I'll be able to judge my title chances more starting on Sunday," she added.

Petrova, ther number 19 seed, dumped 14th seed Amanda Coetzer out in straight sets.

The Russian beat the South African 6-0 6-1 in 65 minutes.

Kim Clijsters, the only top-ranked woman to never to win a Slam title, joined Davenport in the fourth round, eliminating 29th-ranked Russian teen Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-3 6-2.

"The wind was pretty tough out there," Clijsters said after her victory.

"You have to look after your footwork and make sure you take small steps," she added.

The 20-year-old Belgian must now beat 17th-seeded American Meghann Shaughnessy to reach the quarter-finals.

Shaughnessy came back from a set down to beat Russian Vera Zvonareva 4-6 6-4 6-2.

Tamarine Tanasugarn ended Daniela Hantuchova's US Open dreams, beating her 6-2 6-4.
